DIY repairs & warranty

Quick question in regards to Lenovo warranty. Just picked up a pretty beat up T420 with a good motherboard and LCD. Frame is broken at left hinge, base is broken out at same area, and the palm rest is missing. I checked the Lenovo site vs the bios serial number and it appears that the machine is under warranty until spring of 2016. Will I be voiding any future warranty if I source and replace the damaged components? I do not think the warranty would cover such damage as this, so what are my options, if I want to try and keep the warranty valid?

If you can transfer the required labels from the broken base onto the new base, and do this and all the other repairs without leaving tell-tales, the warranty should remain valid.
Call Lenovo up anyway, perhaps your warranty includes accident-coverage!

If you can give Lenovo a justifiable reason, they will actually send you those parts. Keep in mind that they are not normally parts sent to end-users, and you will need to make it clear that you are technically capable of replacing these parts yourself. It also depends on the tech you speak with - some will send those parts and others will say no way!

In my 14 years of dealing with ThinkPads and hundreds of calls made to Atlanta, I've never heard of such a thing.

@DRobinson: First sentence of RBS' post is the advice I'd follow if I were in your position.

Good luck.
