What do I have?

#1 Post by DaElderGeek » Sun Jun 22, 2014 1:45 pm

My T61P with the NVIDIA graphics died on me Friday. I was "under the gun" and wanted to get back up quickly and decided to replace it with another T series. I scored a "fixer upper" T500 (2422 7VU; R-8ERYV3 09/09) off craigslist. It recognized my T61p Windows 8.1 Pro system disk and booted up straight away. After downloading and installing all the drivers I could find, it's not clear to me whether or not I have "switchable graphics" or not. I have a mini dock and dual monitor set-up. My main Lenovo screen is 1280 x 800 and the only display driver showing is "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (WDDM 1.1)" My secondary display is a Samsung SyncMaster EX2220 running at 1920 x 1080. It is connected to the DVI port on the mini dock. I've installed "Switchable Graphics Controller(s)" and the ATI Catalyst Control Center but I don't see an ATI display adapter in Device Manager. If I right click on the Desktop and select "Catalyst Control Center" two processes are started; "ccc.exe" (Catalyst Control Center?) and "MOM.exe" (Monitor?). I also noticed that after these two processes are started, my installed memory drops from 8GB to 7.91GB. I've installed the Thinkvantage Power Monitor but when I select "High Perfomance" in Control Panel Power Options "Apply" is "greyed out" If I try to start any of the programs in the Catalyst Control Program Files folder nothing happens? Do I have an ATI chipset installed or not? If so, how do I make it work?

I haven't cracked it open except to install the memory modules, although I will probably do so soon. The CPU fan assembly has a really annoying rattle. That will certainly tell me more, but maybe someone knows the answer. Compared to my T61p with NVIDIA 570M this system feels a little sluggish and jerky when watching video.

Any insight would be appreciated.

PS: Almost forgot. I'm running "TPFC.62".

To find out the specs of your laptop, lookup the serial and type numbers on the bottom cover. Next, go to Lenovo's website and lookup your model using the numbers.

By the sounds of things, it seems like there are driver issues that are slowing things down. Personally, the best way to iron them out would be to backup your data and start with a fresh install.

2422-7VU is unknown.
According to partslist you have mobo 60Y4463 which has ATI GPU.
Don't know if switchable (should be), but check your BIOS under Config/Display if this option is there and if so, enabled or not.

Sorry for the confusion. I transposed the the machine type numbers. It should be 22427VU but the serial number was right. Where did you look it up? I was able to lookup the detailed configuration got my T61P but can't seem to find it at the Lenovo site this time around.. The BIOS says my system board serial number is VQ0V99760A1. The display configuration page only shows two data points; default primary video device with the only two choices being "internal" and "pci express". The second data point is display device. Nothing at all Amy where about either ATI or Intel graphics.

TYPE lookup: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/landing.page?qpq= Plug in full seven character TYPE in the QUICK PATH box, or if you have previously looked up another model type, then click the green MODIFY button. Alternately, you can append the TYPE to the provided URL.

Parts lookup: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... ookup.page? Enter Serial Number and Machine Type.
