T420 Upgrade From i5 2520

#1 Post by as400 » Fri Dec 05, 2014 6:26 pm

Love my little T420 it has 8GB ram.

Do various video conversion stuff/burning...

Thinking can I upgrade to 16gb and can I update to an i7 processor?

Or would it be too expensive and I'd be better off buying a new laptop?

Welcome to the forum!

Upgrading is certainly an option.

You can upgrade your T420 to 16Gb with 2 x 8Gb.

Yes to can upgrade to an i7 dual core. I have heard of quad core upgrades too. I have no experience there and hope that others with experience can chime in.

Depending on your budget upgrading your laptop to a newer generation processor is certainly an option. With ThinkPads keyboards change with the next generation T430 and again with the T440.

Quad core processors will work fine, but may generate more heat and use more power. As long as you aren't putting in something like a quad core i7 extreme, you should be good
Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, T23, 600X, 770
Other: mk5 Toughbook cf-19, mk1 Toughbook cf-53
