T500 CPU upgrade

#1 Post by shavo » Mon Feb 09, 2015 1:45 am

Hi everyone! Great forum ! :)
My first question here is - I have a T500 with T5870 CPU and 4GB DDR3 RAM, my child and my wife use it. I can buy a used T9550 CPU for 20 euro to change the T5870. Both are socket P so there should be no problem am I right? Is there anything I should be concerned about ? Thanks in advance for your answers. :)

Well, since the T9550 is a configurable option for the T500, it's reasonable to believe that the necessary support (BIOS and hardware) exists. I have neither T500 nor T9550 to confirm though.

Yes, it will work perfectly fine and that is a good processor to choose.

Everything is OK, I've changed the CPU and replaced the 2x2GB DDR3 1066Mhz with 2x4GB DDR3 1333Mhz. This is a different machine now. :) Next upgrades - SSD and 9-cell battery. I am really in love with these Thinkpads.

Nice pics! Hate to be a Debbie Downer but while you had it open it might have been a good idea to find a way to reinforce the frame near the exhaust fan on the left hand side. The frame connecting that area is very thin and has a good chance of breaking at some point in the future. If that section of frame breaks then further breaks on the left hand side of the T500 may occur (e.g. hinge detaching).

Here is a thread for the T60/T60p and the frame issue. From what I have read this may also occur with the T61 as well. I had this type of breakage occur in a T500 I once owned.
