Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
The T410s is a whole other can of worms. This one uses a 1.8" drive. I have to order a Hard drive cover. I need to order a 1.8" drive. Will a caseless uSATA simply slide in without having a protective casing or do I need an adapter? The one i have in mind is a 1.8" 64GB SSD drive. I will order an ultra bay case for a SATA drive as a secondary drive. Do the T410s thinkpads use smaller ultrabay slots than the standard T410? I have to order some more ram. I will get 2x 4GB sticks of DD3 1600mhz. They are backwards compatible to 1333mhz.
Here is the 1.8" SSD.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... llFullInfo
Do I need one of these for the hard drive? My research is that I only need the adapter if I want to format the drive in a USB drive cradle.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1313234368 ... =82&chn=ps
Any tips from T410s owners would be appreciated.

Re: Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
After further research uSATA just means the same as micro-SATA for a 1.8" drive. It's basically a 1.8" SSD drive without a protective case. When I put the drive in I will simply have to line up the pins without the slide and guide of a SSD case.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... llFullInfo
Notice the pin count of an SSD 1.8" Drive with a case. Count the pins up and look at the interface and disregard the missing case. I included pictures so people can follow along. This is like the Kahn academy.

Your best bet is to get a mSATA to 1.8" adapter from feebay and grab a mSATA SSD. that's what I had in my (since sold) X301 and it worked like a charm, not to mention that it was far less expensive than a decent 1.8" SSD.
The Samsung that you linked is a POS, even for $20. Been there and done that.

I'd never buy a refurbished SSD. They have a limited lifetime.

Thanks for the advice. I am new to the 1.8" HDD market. I know a great deal about M SATA and M2 drives from the desktop computer market. I didn't realize they could be used as a 1.8" drive with an adapter.ajkula66 wrote:Your best bet is to get a mSATA to 1.8" adapter from feebay and grab a mSATA SSD. that's what I had in my (since sold) X301 and it worked like a charm, not to mention that it was far less expensive than a decent 1.8" SSD.

One of these things to go with a mSATA drive.

The Samsung 850 EVO is the defacto choice @ 120GB in mSATA.

Does the T410s have a smaller size ultra bay caddy slot for a 2.5" drive than the standard T410?

Here is your Micron Bench score. Very impressive

Couldn't find a benchmark for the Plextor mSATA drive.
I will counter with this one under the auspices of $ cost average. Diminished returns and opportunity cost.

And the all important benchmark.

I think this mSATA to 1.8" adapter is better than the previous one I had listed. It had screws to secure the mSATA SSD without capacitors like the previous one I listed in one of my original posts.

Re: Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
Micron, Samsung and Toshiba are the big 3 in the NAND market. We can argue over performance but in the 1.8" market the pickings are slimmer even with mSata and adapter options. It really comes down to value and that comes down to $$$.
On a side note is their a good generic T410 power supply. I always like to have backups. They have 65w and 90w power supplies. Is the standard supply 90w for the T410 series?

Integrated graphic models use 65W, nVidia units the 90W ones. Get a genuine one for $15 or thereabouts on this forum and be done with it...On a side note is their a good generic T410 power supply. Can I use my old T43 power supply as a backup on a T410s or T410? It's a 16v 4.5Amp supply. Model 08K8208.

Nope. T41x uses 20VDC. In addition, the plugs are different.

Is there any kind of special case or rails for the T410s Hard Drive bay? I ordered the cover already but because of the small form factor do you simply slide in the drive even if it's bare? Are there rails or protective casings mostly for a seamless and smooth fit.

My experience with 1.8" Micro SATA hard drives in other systems (i.e, not a T410s but X300) is that there is no bumper/rails or caddy. It simply slides into the bay. Since I buy non-Lenovo drives off eBay, most of the times the problem is that the drive does not have any pull-tab attached. I make my own using a length of clear packing tape; one end folded over onto itself to create a tab that can be grasped and the rest of it taped to the bottom of the drive.

Just ordered 8GB of 1333mhz Gskil memory. Instead of getting 1066mhz memory I got the 1333mhz memory for upgrading in the future. I know the T410 will only run it @ 1066mhz. I have 4GB of 1066mhz of 2GBx2 ram from an old laptop already.
Anyway the first of two thinkpad's arrives tomorrow.

Ok I am up to 3 Thinkpads now. I think that is good for a few months. The last one is a T410S with 4GB of ram 2.53ghz i5 and NVS 3100m graphics. No HDD or power supply or HDD cover or OS. $102 with free shipping. This was a bidding auction on Ebay.
i5-540M(2.53GHz), 2924-WFE 8GB RAM (4GB Ram), 250GB 5400rpm HD (No HDD), 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, 512MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100m, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn, WWAN option, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64

I thought about using duct tape before but the thickness of that tape, along with what the glue does when it gets overly warm (it oozes), pushed me to use something thinner with less of a chance of losing adhesion when it gets warm. Black electrical tape would probably do the same thing as duct tape if exposed to heat.Hans Gruber wrote:Good advice, I have duct tape. Re: Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
You want my analysis of the T420 series right now on Ebay? A market analysis?

Re: Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
Sure. I'm only looking at the high-resolution LCD panels on each system; that's about the only "must-have" for me. Five recent purchases for T420 HD+ systems (Dec 2014) averaged about $200 each - $171 to $219. Two were Nvidia, three had Intel GPU. All came with 4GB of memory, no OS (Nvidia systems had 320GB and 80GB HDDs) and had perfectly functional screens. Four of them had at least 3 months left on a factory warranty. Two had small cracks in the LCD bezel or cooling vent. All 5 had a 55++ or 70++ battery in good condition (minimum 75Wh charge). The three Intel systems (from the same eBay seller) all had a bunch of tape residue that cleaned up with just a little bit of work. They appeared to be decommissioned corporate units. I was sort of joking before when I said to stay away from bidding on T420 systems. I haven't been actively looking for them for a couple of months. If I were to wade back into the T420 eBay offerings at this time, I'd probably set a maximum bid of $135 to $150 for similarly configured systems to what I bought before. This isn't reflective of what the current market is for these machines; merely what I'm willing to pay since I already have several on hand.
The last T410 I bought was also back in December. Over the course of five months (July to Dec.), I paid an average of $136 for seven systems. Three Nvidia, 4 Intel. Again, all had defect-free WXGA+ screens and no OS (four with no HDD, three with 250GB or 320GB). Five had 4GB of memory (pair of 2GB), two had only a single 2GB module. One system that I still have shows an occasional fan error so I think I'll have to replace it soon. The first T410 I bought is serving as my video streaming machine for my HDTV.

Re: Bought a T410s on Ebay. That makes two T410's
This T410 I got came in mint condition. The keyboard looks brand new. This was that $100 +$15 for shipping. Came with the HDD caddy and the screws were taped to the caddy. There was no dust inside because it was cleaned out thoroughly including the heatsink fan on the CPU. This T410 was advertised as a "B" grade Thinkpad. This one is 1440x900, I was worried because it started out at 1280x800 but after a display driver update it was 1440x900. The other two T410s series are both 1440x900. I think that is the standard resolution for the T410s. They both have the biometric feature. The last of the 3 has the Nvidia discrete graphics in it.rkawakami wrote:Sure. You just answered what I was going to say (you have the pricing correct) regarding the T420 series. You already know your stuff.
