Machine is T420, Type 4236-L23
Windows 7 Enterprise x64

After reboot, mouse works but unable to click to select anything.

Had always (couple years now..) had by default the touchpad disabled as personal preference.

The way I get around this and it is very annoying... if to use ctrl-esc from keyboard to see start menu and navigate with cursor, tab, spacebar to mouse.cpl in control panel

Once mouse control app shows, i have to use tab to go to ultranav (last tab) and then tab over into the ultranav checkbox, unselect with spacebar and then apply. Now touchpad is off and I can click on the left and right mouse selects under spacebar. As long as I don't reboot, all is now Ok.

Have installed latest ultranav drivers from Lenovo but that did not fix issue after the next reboot.

All other pointers (pun intended) are welcome. Have verified all latest drivers but something clearly amiss in registry.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Two things:

1) Have you tried using both the trackpoint button AND the touchpad button? I'd assume that if the touchpad is active then those buttons would work too. At least that would make it easier to get to the mouse.cpl panel.
2) What are the trackpoint/touchpad settings in BIOS?

At reboot, have no mouse CLICK available to SELECT anything, using any button, any control

Once I (see OP) go through the painful steps via keyboard only then I have clicks working, until such time only movement of mouse but can not open or close anything

Have used thinkpads of all model types for over a decade so very familiar with hardware otherwise. This issue is something with a driver loading or not loaded correctly.
