T400 - WiFi Problem

Hello,

The wireless keeps disconnecting at random times. When it disconnects, Windows doesn't see the wireless card unless I restart. Even after restarting, it is not a guarantee that Windows will pick up the driver again.

I have tried disabling the option to not let Windows control the wifi card in the device manager.

The wireless card is a Intel 5300.

I know this is a very common issue. Has anyone had any success with it? It has the latest driver. I can try rolling back to see if it fixes it.

Temporarily, I am using a USB WiFi card and it works perfectly.

Thanks

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I'd try no-cost attempts at fixing the problem before throwing $$$ at it. Try sliding the wireless switch back-and-forth a couple of times; do that with the system off so you don't unnecessarily confuse Windows. On the T400, it should be along the front left edge of the base. If the switch has dirty contacts or is not fully in the on position, that can cause the OS to think there's no wireless card.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to get your hands dirty and re-seat the wireless card. That involves removing the palmrest and keyboard. There's instructions in the Hardware Maintenance Manual here: http://www.thinkpads.com/support/hmm/hm ... 629_05.pdf Remove the card, then re-insert it. Optionally, you could try cleaning the gold contacts with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol but most times it's not necessary.
