Is there anywhere to get this in the UK?

How difficult is the mod? I am fine with build a computer but that is just pluging components together. Is this as simple as that? If it is more difficult is there anyone in London, UK willing to do the upgrade for a bit of cash? I am very interested in this!

It's a bit harder than plugging in a PCIe graphics card - you have to unscrew .. A .. Lot.. Of screws and keep track of things, how they go together, etc. If you are methodical, there's not much more to it than screws, tape, and plugging things in. No soldering or anything complicated like that.

Thanks. I am fine with screws and cabling. Taken this 420s apart except for the display assembly which I guess I will have to learn to do this! So all I need is this board and a known compatible display? I want to get a good quality 1080p IPS. Will it run at 60Hz without issue? Is it possible to do any higher on the refresh if I can get a panel that does higher or is that a limitation that can't be worked around?

My T420s is the HD3000/4200M model but I set it in the bios to only use the HD3000 integratrated as I don't play games, etc. and the Intel is more than good enough for me. Will this board still work with my configuration or will I need to reenable the 4200M?

I have the same config, and use the HD3000 graphics exclusively (disabled optimus in BIOS). Works great. Yes, just need kit and display. No idea about refresh rate, but would assuming nothing other than stock rates are possible.

I just wanted to chime in that I was successful with this mod for a T430S. Very happy customer.

With that said I might offer a couple of suggestions for the kit:

1. Shorten the cable so that we don't have to bend it into an 'S-shape' to get it to plug in.

2. Provide some way to stabilize the converter board to the mobo mount location. I think it's probably stuck in there pretty good with the thermal pads on top of it but it was tricky plugging in the LCD cable without dislodging the converter cable.

3. Update the directions to exclude the scotch-tape step since that appears to already have been done for us.

4. Provide a reason to use the non-conductive tape. I cut it to length and applied it to both sides of the converter cable but then realized it was probably included to resecure the antenna cables. Still unsure about it.

Thanks!

I'm interested in working T420 converter too, will buy one when available.
Now my T420 equipped with X1 LCD, but those viewing angles ... :(

The link here says:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231665072220

Q: Which screen do you recommend?
A: Personally, I'd recommend B140HAN01.2, B140HAN01.3, other screens are better used with color calibration.
is there a glossy option with high color gamut, that doesn't require calibration out of the box ?

does the B140HAN01.3 have high color gamut ? (no information available on panelook)
is the B140HAN01.3 glossy? (getting mixed info from googling)
or,
is the B140HAN01.0 good without calibration ?

Well, my B140HAN01.3 covers 99.7% of sRGB and 77% of Adobe RGB according to my measurements with a Spyder4Pro...

Thanks, That is very good to know :)

Is it glossy ?
Does it work good enough in your opinion without color calibration ?

No, mine is a matte one ;) It isn't that bad without calibration, but it had a blue tint.

Thanks. :)

That is strange, .... because I see here:
http://www.panelook.com/modelcompare.ph ... 3640,20494

panelook.com is saying that the B140HAN01.3 is glossy,

Goggling a bit more, i see datasheet pdf files saying that the B140HAN01.3 is indeed matte surface.

wonder if anyone know if this screen available with both surface types (unlikely)
or if panelook.com have the info wrong..

I just got my adapter yesterday and installed it in my wife's T420s. I used the adapter with a matte B140HAN01.2 screen. It works great! My wife was coming from the 1600x900 screen and was amazed at how bright, colorful, and crisp the graphics were and said she didn't even know she needed the upgrade. She dabbles in photography and photo editing and thought the difference was remarkable. Oh, and she said all this was BEFORE I calibrated the screen.:D

This is well worth the money and time (use patients) to install it. When a working version for the T420 comes out that works with a WQHD display I'll get one of those and post up about it too.

Thank you RMSMajestic this mod has and will breath new life into the T420 series!

Edit: Grammer.

Hi all!

I just found this thread and suffering from an original T420 AUO screen with door effect, poor colour and horrible viewing angle I am highly interested in a display upgrade (as long as the new screen is matte as well). So I would like to express my interest in one of your amazing kits. Is there any chance of getting one to Switzerland (postal adress in Germany also possible and maybe even preferable)?

Thank you all and greetings from Switzerland! :D

Could you help me out with buying this equipment? I want to order it within a country (that is China, as I'm living here now), but I'm not sure whom should I contact or where should I look to get this device.

I just bought a T420 as well and was really disappointed with the screen. Everything else about this laptop is fantastic, but I almost returned it just based on how horrible the screen was! Now that there's hope of replacing it with an FHD, I'm keeping it. :)

this batch of slim kits are officically out of stock. And I'll focus on job/intern hunting until maybe mid-November, however if there's any updates for the non-s kits I'll post here. I'll not respond to PMs regarding this matter from today onwards.

Thank you for the update. Love the screen in my T420s. Would love T420 with a quadcore and this IPS screen

I've not had a 1366x768 14" screen, I bought the laptop with the 1600x900 version. One of my friends has a 1366x768 screen, and I thought there wasn't enough space to be usable and the picture looked grainy. I can say that the text looks crisp and clear on the new 1080P screen; really, everything looks better. Additionally I haven't needed to do any scaling in Windows to make the text readable. At this point I think that a 1080P resolution on a 14" screen is the sweet spot. Once he releases a batch of boards that will allow for a 2560x1440 screen, I'm going to test that. It may be too much though. We'll see.

Another happy end! (for me at least)

I asked RMS to sell me a non-s kit, fully knowing that it may flicker. But my T420 had a damaged screen so I had little to lose.

I have to report that there is no single flicker in my setup (at least so far)

- I got a B140HAN01.0 panel this time (my two T420s have B140HAN01.2 models), it's a glossy one but I don't care. The colors and contrast are fantastic!
- I tested watching FHD YouTube trailers first, both without battery and battery only. No flicker! Watching trailers while charging the battery did not produce any flicker.
- I watched then a full 1080p movie, again with and without battery, and then again with battery while charging. No flicker!

This T420 is running Debian 8 (with no special software) booting out of a mSata SSD and a HDD for data. I have 8GB RAM. Intel graphics.

I'll keep the tests today and tomorrow, will report back if it starts flickering...

Congrats! and hope it lasts without any issues for a long time!

Can you please share a photo of the glossy vs matte in the instances above? In an example photo and example text too please. I plan to upgrade my T430 as soon as the kits become available so just doing a little homework beforehand. TBH, a little skeptical about how the text size would appear under 1080p in 14 inch screen and whether or not it will require any zooming etc.

Thanks in advance!!! I know I am asking for a lot...

I second this!! The T420's and 430's are wonderful machines aside from the screen drawbacks, I'd order a few kits if your findings on flicker-free hold true :)

Thanks a lot for your work on this subject Tasurinchi!!! Also, I'd sacrifice my T430 for the sake of testing the flicker if you're interested. Heck, I'd buy the converter even if it did flicker if it meant 1080p IPS...

Greetings!

Been using ThinkPads since the 1990's models. Just retired my old T400 and got a new (used) T430s. It's perfect in every other way, except the screen. This has to be the worst screen I've ever used. The colors and definition (HD+ 1600x900) are fine, but the screen door effect (or whatever it's called) is really a massive disappointment. I've read around the forums, and as far as I can tell, I got pretty much the worst screen option available.

Long story short. I'd really love to replace this screen with a better one. So when ever you are back in business, I'd definitely buy what you're selling.
