For many computers you can get status from the LED and some OSes does this (particularly linux disributions) but for unlucky people with silent notebooks like T410 I just got with so few features on LED status, I turn to my go-to portable utility called batteryinfoview. This will show detailed status on battery itself, how much power usage in charging and discharge rate for the battery, wear level as well (health/age of battery).

Re: batteryinfoview utility.
Doesn't the ThinkVantage power/battery utility do the same thing? I've always found this much more informative that the standard windows power program, or similar programs from other manufacturers.

Here's the 73Kbyte link to screen shot of what it is monitoring generic battery on T500 notebook:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/jpero/thinkpad ... foview.jpg
Notes: free and portable (just 4 files), tiny footprint memory/storage, ultra low resource utilization. Let it wait, program will reset correctly on estimated battery's runtime around 10 seconds.
