T520i Windows 10 Upgrade from Win7 Pro Question

#1 Post by mlemon » Fri Jul 17, 2015 5:45 pm

Has anyone posted a step-by-step upgrade from Win7 Pro to Win10 yet? I'm perfectly happy with my laptop as-is, but I'm worried MS is going to force me to upgrade so I want to be ready.

If I were you, I'd wait at least until Service Pack 1 is out, before even touching W10...

No one will force you to upgrade. That decision is yours, and yours only.

Unless Microsoft intends to do like they did with XP. No more support and no security upgrades. I get a lot of required updates every week, some I do not install.

It is my understanding that this option will be gone altogether from W10 Home and Pro. The updates will be force-fed.

No wonder, XP were old. End of support is to be found here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

What Microsoft can do is to remove features. For example they have removed Modern Skype (Metro) from Windows 8.1 (it comes preinstalled) recently that means no useable Skype for Windows tablet users anymore making them angry. I really don't understand the Microsoft direction to make their customers angry, especially on mobile devices where their market share is poor.

I wouldn't install the Windows 10 thingy this year for sure. Latest previews was rather a beta stage. There are also almost no customization options (no way to change color of active window title etc.). Also note that Intel HD 3000 graphics have limited support, oficially not supported by Intel on Windows 10.

I have no reason to upgrade from Windows 7 on my X220 (yet), the only interesting feature for me is Hyper-V. The same for Windows 8.1 on ThinkPad 8 tablet because the Windows 10 "tablet mode" is a bad joke and total downgrade compared to great Windows 8.1 experience on tablet (not desktop). Microsoft has done it again :(

Just like Lenovo has done to the Thinkpad, get something right but later on screw it up same old story. Going to try it out, worst than can happen is re-installation and a crap ton of updates.

Installed Win 7 ult on a spare machine yesterday, 216 updates

I came to the conclusion years ago Microsoft does not really give a rats behind about what the customer wants. They listen sure, and pretend but its really about selling and upgrading.

How can they stay in business without upgrades?

Apple is a different story, they innovate sell phones, devices and computers. Apple has more cash and assets than they know what to do with.

I love my Lenovo's but its my understanding they are heading down that slippery slope.

Upgrade to Win 10? Not going to happen.
