Trouble Getting External Speakers To Work on T410

Hello all,
I found a pair of inexpensive ASI brand speakers in my storage closet that had never been taken out of the packaging. Not high quality speakers by any means - they aren't a new model but basically brand new and unused. They have a USB type A male connector and a 3.5 mm jack. I plugged in the USB plug to the port and they turned on (blue light came on the speaker), but the sound is still coming out of the laptop, and the laptop does not recognize the device...it's not shown listed when I click the "safely remove hardware" icon, nor is it shown in my computer.
Next I clicked on the speaker icon and went into the speaker properties and all it is showing is the conexant controller device and nothing there to give me the option to switch to external speakers. I also went into the control panel sound audio section and didn't see anything there either.
Last attempt was to try the 3.5 mm jack in the headphone jack but the speakers wouldn't even turn on (no blue light came on) and sound still came through the laptop speakers. I know the headphone jack works as I use headphones just fine, and the USB port works fine too when I plug in my thumb drives.
So what am I missing here? Do I need to configure something? Or are the speakers just not compatible for this laptop? It's unlikely the speakers are damaged and not working...but I suppose that could be possible somehow (lemons straight out of the box maybe).
Thanks for any tips or advice!
