Picture for external monitor is beyond desktop

#1 Post by alosito » Sun Oct 25, 2015 10:03 am

I connected an external monitor to my t420i (model 4177CTO, S/N r8mp0pp), chose Avalog VGA under Video in bios, and chose the best recommended resolution (1920x1080) in Control Panel. The picture, however, is now beyond the desktop as I see only a small part of the taskbar. The highest resolution that gives me a normal picture for the entire screen is 1366x768. What am I doing wrong?

What's the brand and model of the monitor that you're using?
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E

SInce it's VGA, find the "Auto adjust" setting in the monitor controls (it can be in the menu somewhere, or have an individual button for it), and activate it.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

It's Samsung LS27C750.

When I choose 1920x1080 resolution and use "Auto adjust", it gets even worse. The picture goes beyond the desktop vertically and shrinks by about an inch horizontally.

Try opening up a maximized Notepad before activating the Auto Adjust.

Why did you make this adjustment in the BIOS before trying to make the adjustment in Windows?

The answer to every problem is not in the BIOS contrary to what everyone reads on the internet.

I recommend you go back to the BIOS and revert to the factory setting and make the adjustment in Windows or the Lenovo monitor helper.
T510 i5, T510 i7 4349-A64 - T520 i7 4242-4UU, technically a CTO now.

This sounds like there is some "zoom" setting enabled in the monitor controls. Some monitors have such a feature, but I couldn't find one in the user manual of this model that is applicable to the VGA connection.

Still, I would suggest going through the various settings in the monitor controls, seeing if perhaps one of the sharpness, or position settings is off, causing this.

Also, if possible, try a different VGA cable, just in case.
