Solution for right Shift key caught up with Prev/Next keys

#1 Post by wpyh » Sat Oct 31, 2015 10:44 am

On my T420s, the right Shift key sometimes touches the Prev navigation key. Coming from the X61s where there is a plastic barrier between the right Shift and navigation/arrow keys, I'm actually a bit disappointed in the design change by Lenovo. Yes it looks nice, but sometimes the right Shift key will get caught up with the Prev key. Other users may experience a similar situation with the Next key.

The problem is that, on some T420s laptops, the right Shift key may be misaligned, i.e. they are a bit slanted. On my T420s, the right Shift key was slanted to the left, so when using the right Shift key alternately with the Prev key, sometimes they will touch. I don't know how to describe this better, please just test it on your keyboard: press the right Shift key a few times, then press the Prev key a few times, then press the right Shift key a few times, and so on. You'll see.

The solution:
1. Open the right Shift key. In my case, I popped open the Southern part of the key, then I peeked under it and popped off the bent metal wire harness. then I slid the remaining tabs, it's easier to slide it away from the hinges.
2. The bent metal wire affects the position of the key. Therefore, play with it and see if it's a bit misaligned or slanted. In my case, it was slanted to the left side. So I took it out and turned it around, then inserted it again. It's less slanted now.
3. When playing around with the bent metal wire, I also saw that in the "down" position, it sometimes rests agains some kind of raised metal tabs. I manipulated the tabs to reduce the slant. Be careful, if you pushed or bent a tab too hard, it will break.
4. Scrape off some material from the Southern edge of the key. You can do this with a box cutter (scrape, not cut), or with a metal ruler.
5. Reassemble the key and test.

This worked for me, let us know if it works for you.
