SOLVED - USB and SD card problem - HELP

Lenovo T420s type 4174-AW8 12/05
Windows 7 Pro 64bit was migrated using Samsung program from Samsung 128g SSD to a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250g mSAT.
Known good USB thumb drive and SD card work in another laptop - BUT not in this T420s.
Device manager shows both with yellow mark.
Right click and choose "Update driver software," it reports "The best driver software for your device is already installed."
Uninstall and reinsert and Windows reports "Device driver software was not successfully installed."
How can the "best driver" be already installed, and then not be successfully installed?
This situation applies to both the USB thumb drive and the SD card; which may mean it is not a hardware problem, or am I missing something? Did the migration leave something behind?
