extreme diffculties in finding DDR3 2Rx8 8GB modules 1.5V (2x 8GB; 16GB total).
Always finding 1Rx8 8GB modules which does not work on T420 and most of them that does have 2Rx8 are 1.35V (DDR3L). I need them found so I can replace the memory that is not right in my T420 with standard design to perform properly.
What is needed: Crucial or micron, elpida. DDR3 1.5V R2x8 (low density aka 16 chips per module). I have no idea if R1x8 (8 chips per module would work on T420 as 8GB per module for total of 16GB? Thanks.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Why don't you want to use 1.35v ?
They have the benefit of being able to use them with haswell and broadwell systems if needed.

Hi everyone and Happy Merry:
To richk; This is exactly what I am running in my T420. Z-CPU memory SPD timing and speeds are not right, Thinkpads tend to like standard timings/speeds. This is what making my T420 to behave funny (like long launches, feel of programs not quite right and integrated graphics bit slower. Case in point: bought an elpida DDR3-1600 2x 4GB matched module for integrated T410 and gave the matched pair 8GB micron memory to GPU T410 both are extremely nice performance. T420 memory as is currently right now: pair of 8gb Corsair Vengeance.
to hhhd1; Not all modules are dual voltage capable, must check to make sure.
On matter of different subject; T430 computer, what do it needs to meet requirements for 16GB. Two details I know for sure are DDR3L-1600 and low voltage 1.35V. I do not know what needs is rank. 1Rx8 or 2Rx8 which is 8 chips per module or 16 chips per module?
Cheers, thinkpadcollection

I've read somewhere that all DDR3 modules must support 1.5v voltage by design.thinkpadcollection wrote:to hhhd1; Not all modules are dual voltage capable, must check to make sure.
Even if ram modules that advertise 1.65v for overclocking on desktop, or 1.35v to support DDR3L, they all must still support the default 1.5v.
I do not remember where I read that though, so can not provide any reference.
T430, with ivybridge processor, should support either 1.35v or 1.5v, if you used 1.35v modules, it will run at 1.35v, otherwise it will fall back to the default 1.5vthinkpadcollection wrote:On matter of different subject; T430 computer, what do it needs to meet requirements for 16GB. I have crucial 8gb ram modules, according to hwinfo, it reports that it have:
Module Size: 8192 MBytes
Memory Type: DDR3 SDRAM
Module Type: SO-DIMM
Memory Speed: 800.0 MHz (DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800)
Module Manufacturer: Crucial Technology
Module Part Number: CT102464BF160B.C16
Module characteristics
Row Address Bits: 16
Column Address Bits: 10
Number Of Banks: 8
Module Density: 4096 Mb
Number Of Ranks: 2
Device Width: 8 bits
Bus Width: 64 bits
Module Nominal Voltage (VDD): 1.5 V, 1.35 V
tested and working fine in T520
bought from amazon.com, advertised as DDR3L 1.35v, could dig up exact link if those are what you are looking for

Yes 1.35 works perfectly fine at 1.5v though I've heard mixing 1.35/1.5v low voltage ram with just 1.5v ram is not recommended though I've never tried and can't say.
