W520 - Failing right button on both touchpad and trackpad, what could be the issue?

A friend has a W520 with a problem in both buttons.
Both failed at the same time, so it's highly unlikely both buttons failed together.

With that information, is anyone able to give me an idea about which part could be failing?
I checked the service manual. Does the signal from both buttons go to the keyboard and then is sent to the motherboard?
If so, is it likely the problem is the keyboard? Or something else?

Thanks!

The 2 keys under the space bar are attached to the keyboard, which has one cable to go the motherboard.
The 2 keys under the touchpad are attached to the touchpad, which has its own cable to the motherboard.
The latter could have come unstuck.

Thank you!

So... if both right buttons are failing, what are the options?
You mention both buttons connect individually to different connectors on the motherboard, it's highly unlikely both cables were damaged or became lose, or that their connectors fail, right?

Isn't this pointing to a failure somewhere in the motherboard?

Both at the same time could be a keyboard-driver issue.
You don't mention where you (or your friend) live...
