Thinkpad to IMAC monitor?

#1 Post by koden » Wed Feb 03, 2016 6:34 am

I have a thinkpad T520 as work pc.

At home I have an late 2009 imac

I would like to use imac as an monitor for my T520 and only monitor.
Mouse, keyboard and sound still from laptop.

When I google it seems only to be possible if my laptop has a display port or mini display port, because that is what the imac uses.

Someone have tried HDMI to displayport adapters but it's not working.

Is there any kind of display ports available in Thinkpad world? :-)

maybe on a docking station or something?

Anyone have any idea?

Specs for t520 tells me:

"Digital monitor support via DisplayPort (supports single-link DVI-D via cable 45J7915)"

is this what i'm looking for?
I'm danish. Sorry for my sometimes bad english spelling and understanding.

1. The T520 does have a DIsplayport output port:

2. Only the 27-inch model of the iMac has the Target Display mode. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

thanks... just the one I have 27"

I thought this port was HDMI?

But maybe thats the same?

Anyway... assume I then need to buy a cable with large display port connector and mini displayport connector in the other end.

It's Displayport, trust me.
My X220 has the same port, and I actually need an adapter cable to make it work with the HDMI input of our LCD TV.

Why waste money on Lenovo, when you can get it much cheaper elsewhere?
Search for this on eBay: displayport to mini-displayport cable -hdmi -vga -dvi -thunderbolt

I thought there was some quality diff. ? :-)

Found this here in europe... minidisplay to display..

is that the correct one or should it be display to mini display as I have to send signal from thinkpad to imac?

You can get HDMI to HDMI (laptop to TV) cables for anywhere between $0.99 and ~$200.
Tests have proven that the cheap cables are just as good (and sometimes better) as the expensive ones.
I'm sure the same applies to other cables.
And where Lenovo is concerned: lately they only try to shove rubbish down your throat...
Your money, your decision!

Should be OK. Those cables normally work the same in both directions.
