Hi
CAN YOU TELL ME THE CORRECT SOCKET TYPE FOR THE T420 I-5 PROCESSOR 2.5GHZH

IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE SOME MENTAL-TARDS ON HERE WHO HAVE GONE SPASTIC ON ME FOR WRITING IN CAPS..
FIRST I AM NEARLY BLIND, SO THAT IS MY MEANS OF SEEING CLEARLY... ITS ALLOWED BY FEDERAL LAW AND THE AMERICANS WITH
DISABLIITYS ACT.. AND IVE WARNED THEM ABOUT THEIR ATTITUDE AS SUCH...AND THE LEGAL CONSIQUENCES OF IT FOR THEM AND THIS FORUM... I AM NOT YELLING I AM SEEING.. UNDER MY RIGHTS

Not sure really, but since the i5 CPU supports the PPGA988 socket, I assume that is what a T420 system board has.

@yankeesamurai: I'm only going to say this one time in public and at this typeface size... PMs are sometimes shared between the mod and admin staff here. If you can't communicate in a friendly, non-threatening manner, then be prepared to be banned (temporarily or permanent). This forum has rules of conduct (read them here) and as such, if you violate them, we are free to deactivate your account. From what I saw, you are NOT coming across as a "pretty nice old guy". Remember, first impressions can be hard to dismiss. You have already left a bad taste with one mod and one admin here.
Your explanation for using all caps due to vision problems may be true when you are composing a message but it logically doesn't make any sense for reading everybody else's text since they are using the default, normal sized characters. If you truly need to have the type larger, I heartily suggest that you use your browser's Zoom option and/or the operating system Accessibility settings to enlarge EVERYTHING on the screen. You shouldn't expect everybody else here to conform to your situation. I myself, and I'm sure that many other people here, have to wear reading glasses when using the computer. It would be foolish for me to expect that everybody else increase the size of their text if I couldn't read it.

Processor compatibility in laptops is not as clear-cut as compared to desktops. Besides the socket type, the laptop's BIOS also places limits on the processor models that can be used.
The T420 contains a socketed Sandy Bridge generation processor. Intel refers to the socket as PPGA988, while other sources refer to it as Socket G2 or rPGA988B.
Curiously, the subsequent Ivy Bridge laptop processors are also Socket G2, but the T420 cannot use them, because the its BIOS does not contain the microcode for the Ivy Bridge processors.
Therefore, if you want to ensure the success of your planned upgrade, limit your choices to CPUs that T420 actually came with:
- Intel® Core™ i3-2310M (2.1GHz)
- Intel® Core™ i5-2410M (2.3GHz)
- Intel® Core™ i5-2450M (2.5GHz) (Without vPro)
- Intel® Core™ i5-2520M (2.5GHz)
- Intel® Core™ i5-2540M (2.6GHz)
- Intel® Core™ i7-2620M (2.7GHz)
- Intel® Core™ i7-2640M (2.8GHz)
