(Solved) T410 OSD malfunctioning

I had my T410 fully set up with a Lenovo Win7 recovery disk environment but then it got screwed up thanks to running the original Vista environment in the ultrabay and after messing with the permissions I decided, screw it, it's time to start anew. Only took 20 minutes to restore from the RNR environment, then 12 hours to do all the Windows updates (would have taken 12 days w/o Puppy's instructions in
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 0&p=781734 , gj Puppy)
In my new, fully setup, all updates and important programs installed environment, this time the On Screen Display doesn't work.
I only get an OSD response from Caps Lock and Numlock. Everything else, volume, mute, micmute, brightness, and Thinklight get no response from the OSD. I've reinstalled Hotkey Features Integration and three of its different versions too many times, even reinstalled the related programs (Access Connections, Power Manager) and got the Hotkey patch and latest PM driver, to no effect.
All the hotkeys, Fn+F2 thru Fn+F12 work at least.
This is driving me crazy and I'm hoping TP forum can wave a magic wand and help me out because I don't wanna re-recover and re-reinstall all the updates again.

I'm assuming you've installed all the drivers from Lenovo's support site. Normally I'll do this via Lenovo Update utility. Maybe try running a live Linux distro and see if it works.

I tried the site but I also did attempt the System Update once, but to no better effect....
The micmute also used to have a response but now, not anymore. It's so confusing.
The actual functions do work as in the volume and brightness do go up and down, the mute and micmute LEDs turn on and they are indeed muted in the OS, but the issue is that the On Screen Display icons, the black background windows with the white text, do not show up.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

This is usually solved by using a slightly older version of the Hotkey Features installer, as it contains the OSD software. I recently made a clean reinstall of Win 7 on a Thinkpad recently, and encountered a similar issue. I don't have a download link to give though, as I used the one I found in my backups.

Ah, TPFanatic, we meet once again about the T410. Yeah, same deal happened to me too when I installed fresh in the summer.
Got this link from the thread
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=114234 and crediting Norway Pad for it. An older version has to be used, like axur-delmeria said. I used v 3.81 that Norway Pad recommended.

It's for the T420, but based on the file names, it should be the same as the T410 since it's listed as a supported system. And actually if you change "t420" to "t410", the same site comes up.

Thanks, I'll give that one a shot.
I think I have that installer and I might have tried it before. From what I read the issue I'm having doesn't seem to be exactly the same as the others'. In my case all the hotkeys and buttons do work, they do manipulate the volume/brightness or open up programs/boxes, just the On Screen Display doesn't flash its windows confirming any presses except for caps and numlock.
I'll try more tomorrow and check back!

Thanks again

I fixed it.
Here's what I found.
- Hotkey Features Integration version 3.89.1 (8jvu43ww.exe) is BAD.
- Hotkey Features Integration version 3.87 (8jvu39ww.exe) is GOOD.
- The recommended Hotkey Features Integration version 3.81 (8jvu23ww.exe) didn't work either and was missing the micmute feature.
Version 3.89.1 problems:
- Missing volume, mute, micmute, brightness, & thinklight indicators.
- Broken Full Screen Magnifier
- TPOSDSVC.exe does not run
- manually running TPONSCR.exe only brings back micmute icon
Version 3.87 pros:
- All indicators work
- Full Screen Magnifier works
- TPOSDSVC.exe and TPONSCR.exe both run
Version 3.81 cons:
- iirc not all indicators work
- no micmute
- redundant dialog boxes
Lenovo obviously screwed something up in the newer/newest versions of OSD, and they broke the FSM. But anyway 3.87 fixed all the issues for me so now I just need to remember not to bother with the newest 3.89.1 version ever again because it SUCKS. It's like it's meant for the T430 or E series or newer ones and accidentally lumped in with the classic ones. Fyi the System Update also installs 3.89.1 so if you're having this same issue as me, use the 3.87 installer downloaded from Lenovo's website:
https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... vu39ww.exe
For some reason one casualty is the blue Thinkvantage button not bringing up the Toolbox anymore, but that's perfectly fine by me since I hate that program.

Perhaps the latest version is for Windows 10 (or maybe even 8 ), which IIRC has its own OSD for brightness and volume controls.

Yeah, I never bothered with experimenting with the different versions and just tried one that mostly worked. As for the ThinkVantage button, there's a whole other can of worms that you can dig through on this section and the T430+ section for using it to open other programs like NotePad....

Yeah, there's that "Thinkpad Hotkey" program which is really nice, on my main computer(s) I've programmed it to turn off the screen with the MonitorOff.exe a member made over in the other subforum.
Oddly I have found 3.81 (the oldest one I tried) to be the only one I can get to work most satisfactorily on Windows 10. I might try 3.87 someday on my Win10 testbed to get some of its pros (like Fn+F2 won't work unless you have a Windows password, and even then it brings up an annoying dialog bog with 3.81) but I'm happy with 3.81.
@UMPC It was your idea to try the older versions again and if it weren't for your suggestion I would have either given up or eventually found a fix much later so thanks!
I appreciate everyone's help very greatly.
