T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (paused)
Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
^ I can't click on your pic and see what the "tints" are...
You can't use the old panel with the upgrade kit - different connectors - which is why you needed the mod kit in the first place to use with the eDP AUO panel.
I would suggest you try and reseat the cable to the mod kit - and make sure you are using the sticker\thermal pad under the keyboard...
I am going to say it is probably a low probability that it is the mod kit itself - either the cable isn't seated properly or the screen (I am guessing the screen)....

Thanks a lot! I’ll try reseating the cables. Maybe I’ll try two thermal pads as well, because I’ve applied only one, and I’m not even that sure it’s in the correct place.
I’ll write back when I try, but it might take a few days.

What's the status on WQHD kits? It's mid june now...
Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Hi,
Initial testing of my board went fine with the screen functioning as expected. I detached the screen (after powering off) to remove the tabs and while removing them with a rotary cutting tool I put too much force on one and heard a crack. Now after reinstalling the screen is black.
I thought it could be the LCD so I ordered a new one but that also is black.
The original screen powers up fine without the board.
Are there any diagnostics I can do in case there's a blown component?
Tim

^ hey man, can I ask why are you using a rotary tool for this mod?
You shouldn't need that (not sure what tabs are you referring to).
The mod kit and IPS screen all fit snug as a bug in a rug without tools needed.
I have done both a T430s and T420s - no tabs that needed tools to rotary off..
Unless you are referring to the T420/T430?

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Turns out I'd blown a fuse on my mainboard, went against conventional wisdom and bridged it with solder. Seems to be holding up.
Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Anyone find any more genuine screens at a decent price?
My last one turned out to be damaged and everyone I contact on eBay say they'll send me a "compatible" one and seem to be being deliberately vague...

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Just wanted to say thanks here. I've ordered 2 kits (2 more on the way for spare parts) and have modified 2 T430s machines (one i5/integrated only, one i7/5200M) with two genuine B140HAN01.2 screens. The installation is pretty easy, although it feels like the eDP cable is maybe 0.5cm too long (nothing that can't be pinned down with tape.)
I bought a B140HAN01.3 display removed from a Dell but it turns out that the connector was not the same, FYI.
One of the screens had a definite yellow cast, but a $30 secondhand color calibrator later it looks great.
I applied kapton tape directly to the motherboard/back of the CPU retention bracket to provide insulation, then put the thermal pad on top of the converter board to conduct heat up through the keyboard and used the provided black tape to prevent the board from moving around. (Also retrofitted the xx20 keyboard in the T430s - as I discovered the T420s palmrest won't fit because the trackpad cable doesn't line up so I modified the keyboard itself.)
I finally found the ThinkPad that should have been....

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Just completed this yesterday using the B140HAN01.3 on a T420s. I'm very, very happy with it! Took me a while to fiddle with the drivers, and initially I had some flickering issues, but it's sorted out now.
It feels like getting glasses for the first time.
BTW, I found the screen on Amazon, by seller East Coast LCDs. It was the correct unit.

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
I ordered two kits and got them delivered very quickly.
However, I have not been sent the installation instructions and since there are pads and tape in the package I am hesitant to proceed, without instructions.
I tried messaging the seller via eBay but he seems to be currently unavailable.
Can someone please either upload the word-file somewhere I can download it or simply e-mail it to me?
Many thanks.

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Alright, I've got the converter kit now, and I received the screen today. Model "LP140WF3 (SP)(L1)"... It's not in the confirmed list, but hopefully it works. I ordered a B140HAN01.2 but anyways.
Just waiting for the Kapton Tape to arrive now, and then I'll head on to dissemble & trying out the screen. But maybe I should test the screen as fast as possible incase it doesn't work and I need to return it? Hmm. Maybe the seller won't accept a return like that anyways, since he actually claimed "Screen Compatible Display". (bought from wikiparts)
What do you guys think? Wait for the Kapton tape(i didn't get any tape in my kit) or try the screen asap & installing without any tape? I just don't want to dissemble the laptop unless it's really needed.
Excited to try out my first IPS panel!
Cheers
/Fred

You should definitely try it asap. If it's not the model you ordered and it doesn't work then returning it shouldn't be a problem.fstoltz wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2017 10:40 amAlright, I've got the converter kit now, and I received the screen today. Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Well, I guess so far it's been a success! I installed the kit & the new screen on my T420s. Tried it out, worked perfectly. Assembled the laptop together, was a bit tricky how to place the kit but I think it's alright.
Screen used: LP140WF3 (SP)(L1) Verified working panel. (Will post again if something happens or I notice something)
Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary yet. I'm using Win 7 and it automatically set the screen to 1920x1080. IPS panel is beautiful and colors are good to my eyes. I've tried it using iGPU and NVIDIA GPU. Both works fine. Brightness controls works fine aswell.
Bought the panel from wikiparts on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-14-inch-B14 ... 2749.l2649
Panel was packaged nicely and didn't look damaged or anything, and to my eyes it looked brand new. Had the protective-film perfectly placed over it.
When watching 1080 FullScreen on Youtube I do notice minor flickering sometimes in the top & bottom(tiny bit when scrolling(really, tiny)), but I do recall seeing something like this when using the original panel aswell, so it's probably nothing, and if it's something, it's super minor.
The screen only cost me 32 british pounds, and shipped to Sweden relatively fast(week or so maybe).
Overall, I'm really happy with the result and I'm excited to try it out the coming weeks and hopefully there's no errors!
Let me know if someone has a question!

I wonder if the flickering is due to the screen or if it's maybe the FHD board that maybe needs to be reseated?
Good to hear your screen worked though. I might take a chance and order one myself.

Re: T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD upgrade kits pre-order (opening May 2017)
Hey everyone,
I have a T430s, equipped with the 1600x900 screen. I'm intrigued by the FHD upgrade kit, but I was just wondering...how difficult is it to install?
I work in I.T., and I'm no stranger to dealing with computer hardware. But taking apart the LCD assembly is something that I've never had to do on a laptop, and I'm scared that I might break my ThinkPad!!
I've looked at the hardware maintenance manual, and removing the LCD panel does not appear to be that difficult (thankfully ThinkPads are much easier to work with than other laptops!), but I'm still a little apprehensive nonetheless.
What do I need to be aware of before thinking about attempting this? And are there any reputable sellers on eBay that I can buy the panel from, and not pay an arm and a leg for shipping to Canada?
Thanks!

I did this upgrade on a T420s, and it was easier than I expected. I'll have to pull off the keyboard, bezel, and screen bezel, but it's easier than disassembling the motherboard to replace the heatsink. Don't worry about dealing with the display assembly, they entire thing is sealed up and mounted with screws, so you don't have to deal with filters, layers, etc. Just unscrew, replace, screw back on.Stealth22 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 10, 2017 12:12 pmHey everyone,

I'm running low on the screen cable reserve for T420s/T430s, thus pausing the selling. It will resume if I'm clear that I can get extra cables in. The selling for X1c is not affected

I also bought this screen from Wikiparts on ebay UK a couple of days ago and it works perfectly. It didn't have a brand listed on it and It did require a bit of calibrating, as it had a slight yellowish hue to it but other than that It's been great. No flickering or any artifacts etc.
There was a little bit of damage where the screen looked like it had been bent slightly and I was sure it would be ruined but it was ok. It was well packaged (so presumably damaged before shipping) and arrived very quickly. Only £40 too.

I've done two t430s with t420s palmrest and keyboard.
You are correct that the trackpad cable does not line up. But if you remove some adhesive tape from the trackpad and gently force more cable out and do a angeled cut in the plastic you will be able to get the cable to reach. See picture

Please confirm that my order details are correct. I have not received my product yet. When do I start shipping?

Hi!
I just joined the thinkpad gang after moving from a macbook to a t430, I'm loving it.
Just wondering if there's an eta on when the kit will be available.
Also, I'm not in the loop, is wqhd working on the t430? Wqhd must look amazing at 14 inches.
Edit: I've just read through the entire thread. darn I just got my t430 delivered at a steal of a price (£100),might consider spending just over double for a t430s with i7 if it means I can do either the fhd or wqhd screen replacement with your kit.
Please let me know when your cable issue is sorted out so I can make an order for the fhd kit. Having said that, I'm more keen on the wqhd, so any eta on that?
Also does anyone know if you can put a t420 keyboard in a t430s? Don't want to return that too.
