Ended up getting a new screen replacement which resolved the vertical bands issue. Previous display was defective. Was worried that the converter board or cable had an issue. Glad that wasn't the case

Just got my board and new screen installed the other day. It looks fantastic!

@RMSMajestic I'm still waiting for WQHD, any update for when that will arrive?

Last I heard, end of May pre-orders with shipment a month following that. Can't wait to get stuck in.

I have two questions:

Will we have black vertical borders at the left and right like jakob.lundberg just showed in the post before this, or is it just the picture he used? It will work with natively 1920x1080, right?

What is the expected cost of this upgrade kit as soon as we can pre-order? The last ebay auctions suggest $750 ... really? So to me it looks mostly meant for enthusiasts that want to keep the T420s for reasons that newer notebooks can not offer anymore (ultrabay?)? For me, my overall goal is just to get a Thinkpad in the T4xxs series that has real buttons for use with the trackpoint, and a good enough screen (like most IPS panels offer). A completely before-T440-style keyboard is a bonus but not a requirement. So am I looking at the right way to achieve this, or will it probably be more expensive than doing a keyboard-mod based on a newer T4xxs that I will still have to buy (and selling the T420s)?

It is just the image I used that is not in the same ratio as the screen resolution.

I got the kit for about $50-$60.

Yeah, I believe the $750 ebay price is just so RMSMajestic can keep the listing alive (not that anyone would order at that price, but if they did...bonus for him!!).


Kit cost me approx. $60-$65 CDN and the screen was around $115CDN...

There was a cheaper authentic screen that RMSMajestic posted but I had already ordered mine...

Anyone know when these kits will be available again?

I believe pre-orders will happen near the end of May, with delivery a month later.

I clicked on the X1 Carbon link in the OP and RMSMajestic posted on April 14 in that thread that he still has those kits available.

Reading the X1 Carbon thread that the only difference between the X1 Carbon kit and the T420s kit is that the FCC cable is longer......

Price seems close - for those that are looking for the T420s kit - perhaps ping RMSMajestic to see if the X1 Carbon kit will work in a T420s\T430s and if so, go go go!!

I had asked this question previously and it seems they are essentially the same kit with the exception of the cable. I had thought about just ordering that one and hopefully scavenging the cable from the mountain of donor hardware I've been collecting.

Ah very nice. I will be gone for about a week and don't know if I can preorder in that time. What will be the process to preorder, and how long will it be open?

I'm assuming the AUO panels are the bright ones?

You will need to explicitly ask, but I don't think they are AUO's. From the auction you linked:

Q. What does "We may ship a 100% compatible part number for your screen" mean?

A. This means that if you order your part by the part number we may send a different part number but it will be 100% compatible. We may ship a screen by a different manufacturer.

Yay we are back! Last year I found a kind soul who have built a Full HD T420s for a modest fee for me. Anyone up for doing it this year with a T430s? Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to buy a used T430s off eBay (we can discuss which -- but the one with Thunderbolt is mighty alluring), a T420s palmrest, a T420s keyboard, an upgrade kit from here, a full HD screen, hack the whole thing together, flash the keyboard BIOS and then mail it to me in Canada

nope, Javi has kind of given up. Though we promised to do a batch order for those guys at German thinkpad forum who are willing to take risk on their own. In one sentence, there will be probably in total ~100 kits worldwide that might not work.

Maybe I'm just plain stupid or just naive, but why wont he release a schematics and part list? Ok, I know, "it's all about the money", but if he has given up already...? More people, more eyes, maybe someone will think about some solution?

Sorry in advance if this is the wrong thread, but.

I’ve bought the upgrade kit by msmajectic las autumn or early winter, and a few days ago I’ve recieved and installed an
AUO-B140HAN01-3 from here. And it looks sweet as pie on dark backgrounds, or on absolute white, but on light backgrounds about the left third has a pronounced tint:

Under some circumstances the tint is bluish or cyanish, under some other it’s just dirtier colors, it may not be noticeable on busy backgrounds, but it never changes position. It’s always the same ~105mm from the left.

So, does anybody have any idea, what’s going on? Is it a faulty panel (or damaged) panel? Is something wrong with my upgrade kit? Or did I mess up the upgrade job? Like damaged the cable with a hinge or something?

And do you think it’s a good idea to try and attach the old TN panel to the upgrade kit cable, just to see if the stripe goes away? Is the upgrade kit compatible with the old panels?

PS. My Thinkpad is T430s with i5 & Intel HD 4000.
