T420s/T430s FHD/WQHD naming problem

#1 Post by dr_st » Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:43 pm

Stop calling QHD WQHD. Or start calling FHD WFHD. :twisted:

What's up with (W)QHD? Is this actually allowing for a 2K or 3K mod?

What does the WQHD actually mean, adapter on the motherboard for that kind of screen? Also how much for WQHD screen, carbon ones are pretty expensive from ebay. Anyone any working links from somewhere else?

I just got myself a T420s I7 to do this mod for, I just want IPS screen and would prefer the higher resolution in spite of some scaling issues.

It's a semi-official name for a resolution.

HD stands for 1280x720. QHD stands for Quad HD = 2560x1440 which is exactly 4 times the number of pixels in HD.

At some point some people who either had no clue or did not think it's obvious enough added the W to QHD (W stands for 'Wide'), even though HD in itself is already a 'Wide' resolution. And so now sometimes it is called WQHD and sometimes QHD.

well that's a bit too early to discuss, just got back from Javi that the PCB design is not finished yet and those in USA probably need to wait after Christmas and those in the rest of the world maybe a bit later.

The development of the kit was not brought up for the avoidance of competition with kingkonglue. who offered kits based on different solution. His mod needs the sacrifice of DP port, UEFI boot and also the compatibility of multiple monitors. (on reddit someone also provided the collective order for this solution)

Javi's kit is based on dual channel LVDS to eDP conversion, which does not have the problems above, however consumes a bit more power.

HD = 1280x720(720p) or 1366x768(1080i) - 16:9

HD+ = 1600x900(900p) - 16:9

FHD = 1920x1080(1080p) - 16:9

2K = 2048x1080 - 17:9

WUXGA = 1920x1200 - 16:10 (Correctly it should be 8:5)

UWHD = 2560x1080 - 21:9 (Correctly it should be 7:3)

WQHD = 2560x1440(1440p) - 16:9

WQXGA = 2560x1600 - 16:10 (8:5)

UWQHD = 3440x1440 - 21:9 (7:3)

UHD-1 = 3840x2160(2160p) - 16:9

4K = 4096x2160 - 17:9

Tada the various resolutions and their appropriate code names... I also included the aspect ratios.

I love my 16:10 displays, too bad they've been relegated to tablets.

Except you will see people referring to UHD as 4K and to both QHD and FHD as 2K. Also, 3440X1440 is gaining popularity, with the trending moniker of UWQHD.

In fact, it consumes significantly less power, because only one video output is active. Javi's kit consumes about 80mW, which is far less than ~1.6W of additional consumption in dual display mode.

Not exactly. The T420s kits being sold here is based on a low power consumption solution which won't work for 2K due to the color mapping problem. And one could modify the BIOS to avoid that dual display problem altogether with UEFI and multiple monitor problems

What color mapping problem? Still, with FHD it consumes far less than another kit which relies on DisplayPort from docking connector.

I've read this so many times for a couple of years, but nobody has yet published a modified BIOS image, and that sucks.
