With RAM in or out:

No sound
No video

Green lights Caps Lock, Numlock flash, followed by steady Z, AC power, and battery.

Sometimes shuts off by itself and turns itself back on.

Green lights Z, AC power, and battery stay on.

No sounds or video!! This was a perfectly working T500 I took apart to replace its hinges and repaste the thermal paste and now it won't post. Help

it is looking like this: http://i.imgur.com/ZB6kiDk.jpg it's powered on but stays like this for over thirty seconds with no change.

Sounds like something went wrong in surgery. Either something is not installed properly causing a short or there's a blown fuse somewhere. Taking memory out should cause a memory error beep. If not something is seriously wrong. Did you by chance took everything apart with the battery in? Could be a number of reasons.

I had the AC and main battery disconnected. I left the CMOS battery in. I've done the following:
FTC wrote:Hi,

This happened to me twice before.

Try this first :

Remove battery. press 10 times the power on button and the last time hold it down for 30 secs.
put battery back on and try to reboot.

And this second (most likely will be needed if the CMOS memory is corrupted)

Remove battery
(if in doubt for the following consult the HMM which can be downloaded in the lenovo site)
Remove the 4 palm rest holding screws and the palm rest
Disconnect the yellow backup battery wait 30 seconds and remount it.
Screw back palm rest and insert battery.
It should work now.

If it still does not boot, it is a hardware problem => call for service.

Now, why does this happen ? I *think* this is caused by hibernating-closing the lid too quickly while still connected to the network ... but not sure yet.
to no success.

I have to log off. Tomorrow night I will reseat the CPU.

Getting to the CPU fixed it. Thanks everyone.

I often wondered what would happen if the CPU wasn't locked in. :)

I've got another machine with a questionable motherboard that has the same symptoms with or without the CPU in. No idea what's up with that one except it's not worth dealing with since the ATI chip is faulty.
