Fan noise need help

#1 Post by radiator » Wed May 03, 2017 1:55 am

I have bought used t410. From time to time my fan starts to run very fast without any reason. I gets noisy in idle. Tried to clean vents, reinstal PM in vain. So I removed PM and noise is bareble. Any ideas how to deal with it?

You probably have dried up thermal paste and the machine is close to overheating.
Refresh that (after cleaning everything first) with some decent paste.

Install "Core Temp" or similar first and see what your actual temperatures are reaching. As mentioned above, It could be in need of thermal paste or It could be caked in dust inside the fan itself.

I cleaned the fan and changed thermal grease. No I am wondering which power plan to choose from PM. I notised that it runs ok when web browsing, typing etc., but when I start watching Youtube fan starts to run noisier. My laptop is almost always on AC adapter and has maximum cpu speed adaptive and GPU max performance. I don't knnow which power plan to set. Have you got any experience with PM settings?

Hi, I use the max performance setting.
Typically, the fan starts to spin up pretty early with the standard fan speed settings but I use the TPFanControl application and choose "Smart" option. The fan remains silent until temps get to around 60 degrees and it gradually increases speed with the rising temps after that. All in all, it performs just as well as the standard fan speed settings at higher temps but way less noticeable at low-moderate temps.

Take note of the temps your machine is at when the speed ramps up. It'll make it easier to diagnose what may be causing it. Also, check to see what other processes are running too.

Thx a lot. It somehow helped to reduce noise but under the keyboard you can feel a bit hotter.Isn't bad for cpu lifetime?

Well it depends on what the temps are. Did you install any software too see the actual temps, as I mentioned previously? What is the peak temp you're getting now? TpFanControl also lists your temp but I often find it's not as accurate or is a bit lagging behind say CoreTemp.

My cpu temp goes 38 C from start up to no more that 60 C when watching YT. I'm used to quiet thinkpads. My old T60, x60, t41 were all quiet. Or simply I was among those who were lucky with a decent model.

There's certainly nothing wrong with 60C. I don't start paying attention until temps get above 80C.

You can change the settings in TPFancControl to make it even quieter if you want. Just edit the setting .ini file. I use the following:

MenuLabelSM1=Quiet Mode/
Level=60 0
Level=65 1
Level=70 2
Level=75 3
Level=80 4
Level=85 5
Level=90 6
Level=95 64
Level=99 128

So my fan doesn't even go on until I hit 65, which means it rarely goes on. I can barely hear the fan until setting 2 or 3, which this profile reaches somewhere above 70C. You can also set up two smart mode profiles in TPFanControl if you want to be able to switch between a really quiet one like this and a more conservative one.

I've used TPFanControl on all my Thinkpads since the T20. They've always seemed to have pretty loud fan settings.

When I enabled all my sensors it turned out that my pci sensor goes up to 59 Celsius. CPU goes around 45 so the fan noise it coused by pci device.
I guess it can be my wifi card. Ho to cool down my fan noise.
This is my screen of tpfancontrol

Set it to BIOS and not to Smart mode.

There is an alternative software solution -- use http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube to watch youtube videos.

I'd like to as you about sth strange. When I set to bios mode in tpfancontrol it shows fan 128 like in the picture below
Image
but when set to smart mode it shows fan 3
Image
image uploader
what sensors are those? Is fan 3 responsible for cooling cpu? I can't make head or tail of those sensors. Which of those shown in the pictures is responsible for cpu temp?
