T500 system update problems

I have got a NEW T500 off local store. 5 battery charge cycles, still all stickers intact (including "lenovo" cover), no wear anywhere, full option (WSXGA+, Intel+ATI, T9550, 4Gig, WWAN etc.). am not planning to use it really - it was rather an occasion to get a NOS thinkpad, and now I want to make it as usefull yet pristine as possible. And sell it back to some needing soul later.

The problem (?) is, the machine still has the preloaded system. I've updated it with SP1, and upgraded Lenovo System Update to 5.07. Now while trying to launch the system I get a notice: the system update server is invalid, please contact the support center. What could possibly cause this problem?

Nope, this is something a bit different from anything I've seen so far. The SU does not even try to get the updates.
