Flashed Coreboot now T420 won't power on

#1 Post by t140568 » Thu Aug 31, 2017 10:45 pm

I flashed Coreboot to my T420. When I plug in the AC adapter, the power button lights up for a second or two, then turns off. After I press the power button it lights up for another second or two and turns off. The fan does not spin or twitch, there are no beeps, no output to LCD, or any other signs of life.

I've checked the RAM (different chips in different slots) it seems that is not the problem. I've plugged in/unplugged the AC adapter and CMOS with no luck.

I can still flash to and read from the BIOS chip. I've tried going back to the original BIOS - it flashes over, but does not solve the problem. I know each flashing of the BIOS/Coreboot is successfully flashed as I've checked it against the original file after flashing it.

I'm assuming I've somehow killed the board beyond the BIOS chip and have already ordered a replacement (two, in fact!), but if I'm wrong I'd like to fix this board. Ideas? Does anyone know what I might have done to cause the failure? I'm not sure what I did or how to fix it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Is the behavior any different with AC in and battery out?

I was unaware that Coreboot could be flashed on anything later than a T500.

Maybe I'm thinking of Libreboot.

Libreboot is limited to the older systems. Coreboot does in fact support the T420.

The laptop is almost completely disassembled on my desk. Battery is not attached. I've only tried to power on with the AC adapter.

What rom are you using? If you compiled it yourself, what does your config file look like; if you got a rom online, which rom? Which boot loader are you intending to load?

What is your boot medium and what OS is on the boot medium? I've found the easiest is to use debian on a sata drive and plugged into the main hard drive bay, and no other medium attached.

It's a wide-range smattering of questions, I know, but I ask because I've seen odd behavior on the first (several) attempts to boot into a newly flashed coreboot machine -- including five different t420 boards.

I have since received a motherboard I bought on eBay and have successfully flashed a coreboot Rom I compiled myself.

As for the original motherboard, iirc I compiled coreboot, but used files I found online (couldn't tell you which one at this point). I was attempting to boot from an SSD I had in the main drive bay with Ubuntu 17.04 already installed and functional.

Once I get a little time I'll try again. I've learned a little more and now that I know what a successful flash entails and looks like I think I stand a better chance. I'll post back after my attempt.

UPDATE: After properly extracting all files from the original BIOS and recompiling, etc. I have still had no luck. I'm just going to consider it a loss at this point. Also, when I ordered a replacement board, I ordered two. I've successfully flashed to that board as well. As they say, "Two out of three ain't bad."
