T420 and i7-4610M?

#1 Post by lukee » Sun Oct 22, 2017 9:31 am

Hello,
I own a T420 ThinkPad and I have recently got a CPU which has P/N on it: SR1KY. Per Google, this seems to be 4th generation of i7 (4610M). The question is if I can use it in my ThinkPad T420 to get some performance boost? Currently, the laptop has a Sandybridge CPU inside.
Thank you.
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"
My first ThinkPad was 570

No sir.

You can get the 3rd generation Intel CPU to work with a BIOS mod, but not the 4th.

Anything is possible. I haven't heard of anyone with a 4th generation cpu in a T420.
You could replace the motherboard with something newer and then figure out how to connect the keyboard. All possible, but not common or easy.

As ajkula66 wrote, you can put a 3rd gen quad core in a T420, but you first have to flash bios with a hardware flasher (take machine apart and connect it to a programming device).
T420 i7 3612QM seabios; T420 i7 3630QM; T400 Q9100 seabios; T61 P9600; T60 libreboot; x62; x60s libreboot, led; x24 xiphmont led
