Windows XP x64 on T520

#1 Post by nick99nack » Wed Feb 14, 2018 8:45 pm

Does anyone have any experience with installing Windows XP x64 Edition on a T520? If so, did you have any trouble? Were there any drivers you couldn't install? And finally, how did it run?

I have a T520 that I'd like to install XP on and still be able to use the full 8GB of RAM. (Yes, I know XP is old and no longer supported and the x64 edition has some weird quirks with some software, but I just want to know if it can be done)

Yes it can be done but driver support will be lacking at best.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I tried it on a W520. It actually had decent driver support but it took some searching to find drivers. Nvidia had a compatable driver but it wasn't nearly as good as the Optimus driver supplied by Lenovo for Windows 7. The main issue was that it didn't handle the i7 multithreading very well. Most of the processing was done on one core and the others were idle. In Windows 7 the processing was evenly distributed among the cores. I haven't found a Thinkpad that really works well for Xp x64. The two most promising ones, the W520 and W701 didn't work out. They both came out after Xp x64 and they both worked with it but not nearly as well as Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Driver support was a bit better for the W520 but that might just be that I looked harder and longer for the drivers. After one failure, I wasn't going to pursue another one very far.
I've got a T580, 2 W500s, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an 3 X61Ts, a 15" T60, a 14" T60P, a 15" UXGA T60P, a 15" T42p a W701, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

Well if that's the case, it sounds like it's not worth the trouble. Ah well, I'll just keep Windows 7. Thanks for the info!
