T500 Thinkpads

#1 Post by dave67 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 9:40 pm

I was wondering if the battery and the ram are the same in all the model types? I currently own 2241CC1 i was looking to replace it with a newer t500 with one with the fingerprint reader. Which seems a little newer model.

Thanks dave

All T500s are made in the same time frame. You can get different ones with fingerprint readers but you can just get a palmrest with a FP reader instead a whole new machine.

Battery is compatible among all 4:3 T60, T61, R60, R61, W500 and T500 models.
RAM is DDR3 and compatible among ALL LAPTOPS from ~2009-2015. Thinkpads from the xx00 series up to the xx50 series can take the same ram. It is quite cheap to upgrade yours to 8GB from 2x4GB sticks.

The P9400 is a whopping 8% faster but ok.

Instead of buying a whole new machine you can buy:
Bluetooth capable card: 5-6$
P9400 CPU: 25$(You can get a much faster T9600 for 10$ which is 24% faster)
T500 palmrest w/ FP reader: 20$

Plus, if you are upgrading the CPU by hand, just pick a nice and fast one instead of a P9400, more like a T9400 (recommended), T9600, T9800 or T9900.

I bought a T500 machine from e-Bay that had the P8400 2.26 Ghz processor, 2GB of ram, and a paltry 80GB 5400 RPM drive. It did have the FPR though. A lot of the machines I see on e-bay had the FPR. That must have been a big thing back then. I see more T-510's without it.

I upgraded my T500 to a T9600 2.8 Ghz, 8GB of RAM, and a 250GB SSD. It's a very nice machine now and the last with the tall displays.

This T500 replaced another T500 I had with the P8600 processor that I never upgraded past installing 8GB of memory.

If you decide to replace the memory, they are pretty finicky about what they like.

For the T500. I think the Core 2 Duo T9600 is the best processor for the money today. I have the T9900 and T9600 and unless you have a 1920x1080 panel and want a reference quality thinkpad. The T9600 is the best processor when you consider price. Besides these are old machines and a few hundred mhz means very little in 2018.

For me, I want those few extra MHz. It is probably a bit of placebo effect but I like when stuff is maxed out. My rule: If your laptop isn't blowing hot air out the side after 1 hour of use, it isn't going fast enough(exception is my main PC because I have an OC 12 core processor but a HUGE heatsink)

If your resource monitor is showing CPU usage at 100% a lot then upgrading a CPU can help a little in preventing max utilization related lag when browsing.

I have three or four quad-core T500 sitting on a shelf in Pennsylvania. If anyone's interested in them send me a PM. I bought them and modified them to use Q9100 (4 core, 12 mb L2 cache) with the plan of bringing them back to Europe with me. But, didn't have space in my luggage.

For the dual-core, the P9600 is a great processor. Upgrading a P8400 to a P9600 is simple if you have:
1. a screw driver ($1)
2. the T500 Hardware Maintenance manual pdf (free)
3. thermal paste ($5 - $10 on ebay)

Using an instruction manual is either cheating or amateur hour. No manuals required. You can't just have one screwdriver you have to have an entire set to appear professional. Agree with the P9600 processor.

Oh yes, I used to think that too when working on Minuteman II LGM30F. We didn't need no stinking manual We had everything memorized.

The OP intends to buy an entire machine in order to add bluetooth. He has little-to-no experience in computer repair. Without the manual he will be lost; with the manual he will easily replace the cpu and add a bluetooth daughter card.
