I'm not sure if it even matters but I'm worried Windows will cause problems if it can tell the wrong drive is in the machine? Does that make sense?

People appreciate buying your T420 with SSD. These users do really need SSD. I have T420 as well with SSD running win 10 Pro and is what kept this relevant in age of 2018 especially for this age that date back from 2010. Yet better use COA key for your windows 7 to install windows 10 instead. Keep both at 8GB or 16GB total using pair of matched memory modules to help with integrated GPU performance.
