Does anyone here have a T430 with an upgraded CPU and this screen controller + FHD IPS screen that has no flickering issues?
Yes. I made an in-depth post about it here.

Kit from e-qstore (I believe the original poster) with behind the display mounting, FHD B140HAN01.2, 3840QM, 16GB ram at 1866, discrete GPU, standard 90 watt adapter. Absolutely no flickering issues.

Absolutely no flickering issues.
May I ask how long you have the kit? Mine originally was not flickering either, it came after few months of usage.

And it doesn't flicker even when you charge the battery from eg. flat to 100%? Mine does flicker from 1 to few minutes after the charging starts. Apart from that, it's flicker-free.

I'm dissatisfied with the longevity of quality in these AUO panels.

I have a B140HAN01.1 in my T430.
I have a B140QAN01.1 in my T430s.

Within a month of installation they have each quickly developed pressure marks and scratches. I transport the laptop with the lid closed in a backpack, which is normal usage.

Part of the blame, I believe, goes to the flexible nature of the thin lids used in the designs of the T400s, T420, and subsequent models in those lines. These are not "true" clamshell lids, lacking the dust-protection of older models like T410, T500, and the IBMs, and the rigidity of those models with thicker lids (although they still develop defects). As a result the lid and the LCD within are easily and often deformed to flex, which I believe leads to formation of pressure marks and scratches as it bumps the keyboard.

I don't know if other manufacturer panels or specific models are more resilient.

The post was end of October, so most likely the beginning of October. I've been using it as both my primary work and personal machine, so it gets an almost constant all day/all week long use, and also rather abused since I lug it everywhere. If I ever do experience an issue, I will post an update.

I don't think my battery has ever been completely flat. As stated above, it's in almost constant usage every single day. The lowest it ever gets is ~40% on the train to work. There were maybe only 1 or 2 occasions where it was left unplugged by accident and died, but I didn't notice any flickering (not that I would have been looking for it, since I haven't experienced any issues in use). If you notice an issue with the battery very low, it could be a low voltage issue ... though I did have an issue with the laptop completely shutting off with the 3840QM + NVS at high load, but that was with a non-Lenovo and 6 cell battery (vs the 9 cell Lenovo battery). I never determined if it was the cell count or the generic battery, but if you have a knockoff battery I'd be weary of that.

Let me rephrase - does it flicker when you charge the battery? The initial battery value doesn't matter. Flat was just an example.

It's good to know that it can be achieved, but I wonder why so many of us fail to get that holy grail and have some kind of issues.

EDIT:

I've recently had to replace my motherboard. It's basically 1:1 with the old one (both have flashed modded BIOS v2.78), the difference the new mobo has old MEI firmware and it came with smartcard reader, so I connected it. I don't know if it matters, but I'm mentioning it anyway. The biggest difference is that the screen doesn't flicker at all even when the battery is being charged. Nothing, zero, nada. I have found my holy grail :)

EDIT 2:

It also seems that an issue with battery disappeared. It manifested itself at random times - battery being at a double-digit % charge was reported out of nowhere as nearly empty (between 1 and 3% I believe). OS warning was popping up and after few seconds passed the battery charge value was back to what it was. It was irritating, as I had to set critical threshold value in Windows to 1% otherwise the laptop could go to sleep because motherboard thought the battery was nearly empty. And I am 100% certain it was motherboard because I even ordered a brand new, original 9-cell battery because I thought the battery was at fault here. Nothing changed. Moreover, when I had a 2nd T430, same thing happened, although I'd say the problem surfaced at different battery charge levels if I remember correctly.

Maybe, just maybe, the part of mobo responsible for managing the charging/battery has something to do with the flickering issue, considering that it happens mainly when the battery is charged, not on cable-only or battery-only power.

Panels for fhd mod... A little while ago I did an fhd mod on a 420s using the evan joo kit and a B140HAN01.3 - was able to get a genuine screen (pulled from a t440) from one of the chinese ebay trusted sellers. Sold that one a while ago and have bought a t430 non s. Looking around ebay, amazon, aliexpress etc now, I see the chances of getting a fake B140HAN01.3 are pretty high. A couple of sellers still have genuine screens pulled from t440/450, but at sky high prices, so not worth it I reckon. Given that plus the possibility of flicker being discussed here, I'm looking at a 1600x900 drop in using an alienware TN screen. However, same thing here - looks like lots of fakes around, especially given that the screen in question (LP140WD2 TL G1) is a discontinued model and they're all selling new ones... A few US sellers have what looks like NOS complete LCD covers with screen from the Alienware model, but none of them list the panel model no, just hd or hd+. So, maybe back to FHD mod... Have seen a few BOE NV140FHM-N62 on ebay that might be genuine. They're on Evan Joo list of compatible screens - anybody tried one? (My other thought - and also discussed on this thread - is why not buy an el cheapo that's not on the list?) At the mo, a Trademe NZ seller has the Innolux N140HCE-EAA 1080 panel for sale at $NZ129, but would it work? It's the standard (and pretty low rent!) FHD panel in the t460 I am typing on right now, so has some thinkpad history. Any thoughts, and anyone know some trustworthy sellers with affordable prices??

i'm using the evanjoo kit since september '18, without any issues at all, it keeps working flawlessly. No flickering or any other strange things.
I'm using an i7 2640m T420s with 16 Gb RAM, Nvidia Optimus and msata+hdd.

I purchased one of these kits from evanjoo as well for my T420s with an i7 2640m and 16gb ram, installed worked for a day then screen turned off and computer rebooted, evan sent me a new one installed worked fine for about half an hour after a pretty delicate install then the screen flickered, went blank then laptop rebooted. Has anyone else had this issue? I have it placed under the keyboard.

According to e-qstore, that cable is not compatible with the older kits where the PCB was placed behind the LCD.

Just done my T430 (i5, hd4000 graphics, 2x4gb ram, ssd) with Evan Joo kit. Bought a B140HAN01.3 panel from here - https://www.ebay.com/usr/9.hk443?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 - at end of March. Looked genuine, was advertised as for T440 and came with FRU sticker no on it. This panel cost me $NZ110 which worried me a bit as there was another seller I've used previously for same panel and he was selling them for 3x the price on his site. I wasn't prepared to pay that sort of dough, so went ahead with this one and am pleased with it (Some evidence in favour of it being for real is that it initially fired up with a greenish tinge which Win10 colour management couldn't do much with until I loaded this - https://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/t ... AN01_2.icm - so it's behaving the way a genuine panel would as well!)

Anyway - it's running fine with no evidence of flicker. I've spent a week trying it out with various combinations of high and low charge in battery and under load (video downloading and converting) in an effort to get it to misbehave but nothing. I'm thinking of a quad core cpu, so will report back if that causes any problems.

What is the consensus on T420 / T430 FHD upgrade kits? Is the EvanJoo / e-qstore offering the best bet? I just noticed that one of his competitors have increased the number of supported panels, which might make sourcing a suitable display a wee bit easier. Here is the listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-1080p-1920 ... SwpUVdaiqv

They advertise support for:
AUO B140HAN01.0 B140HAN01.1 B140HAN01.2 B140HAN01.3
LG LP140WF1-SPB1 LP140WF1-SPV1 LP140WF1-SPK1
SAMSUNG LTN140HL02-B01
BOE NV140FHM-N62 NV140fhm-n41
Innolux : N140HCA-EAC

Some of these are a bit dim, at only 250cd/n, but it's hard to justify spending more on a used Alienware 1600x900 panel, with keycap imprints, than a "real" FHD display, The only trouble is all of the counterfeit panels out there. Knowing what you know now, whose kit, if any would you purchase?

Thanks in advance!

It's massive, but you wouldn't be able to use it in a 14" laptop running Windows without massive scaling. Maybe be a worthwhile upgrade for folks who are super-sensitive to pixelization, but for the rest - I'm not so sure.

I wouldn't call myself too supersensitive, as I am using an old 32" 1080P IPS TV, as a monitor for my PC. Believe me, I can see each pixel in all of its glory and I promise you I don't use this display to look at text, as it won't do chroma 4:4:4. ; )
Spending "all the money" on a 1440P display would completely spoil me and force me to upgrade all of my other displays. This would take away from the care and feeding of my other two (so far) ThinkPads which also need WiFi cards, batteries, RAM, SSDs, i7 upgrades and etc.

On the plus side, my favorite Linux distribution handles fractional scaling pretty well. The bulk of my complaints with the existing 768P panel will be resolved by merely replacing it with an IPS display. But, I won't lie, I'd also like to fix the fuzzy text, which should be adequately addressed by stepping up to 1080P. My thought process is that if I go with 1080P, that will leave a few nickles and dimes left over, that I can put towards a Nitrocaster board for my X230.

My T440p has an IPS FHD LP140WF3-SPD1 and it's beautiful!
It runs W7-Pro/SP1/64-bit with 125% scaling.
This screen will probably also fit and work in the T420/T430.

I have few T420/T430 with both JaVie and EvanJoo kits and both models got the flicker issue... :|

Folks like RMSMajestic appear to understand the root cause of the flickering issue, but I've never seen it explained here, in the forum. The only relevant comments are that it would be cost prohibitive to address and the EvanJoo kits merely minimize the likelihood.

I don't see how the 1440P kits would address the root cause of the flickering issue, because 1) the controller architecture looks pretty much the same, 2) the additional cost is minimal (so no new expensive technology in play) and 3) they are merely stealing a couple more eDP lanes, in order to get the required bandwidth.

The bulk of my use is either on battery, or on AC with a fully charged battery, so I am thinking that the potential for flickering would be minimal, with my usage habits. If the panel flickers on AC with a fully charged battery, though, I think that this would be a deal breaker for me.

Indeed. I have the javi-jie kit for my T430s and I use it with no scaling, but my eyes are still young. I'm foolish enough to go for a 3K or 4K upgrade if the mods existed, the screens do.
