T420 -> always on USB -> sleep -> crash

#1 Post by hberg32 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 7:48 pm

Has anyone had problems with a t420 crashing when going into S3 sleep when the always-on usb power is enabled? I've had this machine for years (Win7 64) with no problems but recently it started powering itself off when going to sleep. Windows would then come up with "windows did not shut down correctly - do you want to start normally?" message when powering on. There are no dump files and nothing in the event log other than a notification of an unexpected shutdown. Suspecting a power problem at the hardware/bios level I turned off the always-on usb power setting in the bios and the problem went away.

Think my mainboard might be going flaky?

The always on port on those is on a removable board, seperate to the motherboard. You could try renabling it and disconnect pysically to see if it still gives you probs.
Replacements are pretty cheap online, if the board/port is the cause.

Thanks guys, I'll try disconnecting the board. But maybe a new battery first. The utility says the condition is "good" but I think it's more like "meh".
