T400 HDD Swap

#1 Post by Art » Mon Aug 06, 2018 5:47 am

Hi Guys :)

I had so much fun upgrading my T400 for cheap. It recently accompanied me on a week long trip in the Australian outback, and I found that I babied it too much,
protecting it from dust and such... I care too much. The whole idea of the cheap laptop was to be mistreated and beaten around without any concern!

The solution... I’ve just returned from buying an identical one, but this is in nicer condition, and has Windows 7 installed.
I’d like to simply swap hard drives. Is this easy to get to? I was somehow under the impression that the HDD just slid out like the DVD drive, but now looking, I can’t see that.

Basically I’d like one of them to be XP, and one Win 7, but the nicer T400 should be XP (the one that stays at home).
I’m under the impression that simply swapping their HDDs should achieve that without any hassle.

Cheers :)

Swapping HDD/SSD between them should be no problem, T400 has only a HD-cover to remove.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

You still have to open at leas the palm rest part right? Like to add RAM? Or less than that?

EDIT,,,
Ok I found a YouTube video that should sort it.

On the T500 it's under a small cover on the right side forward bottom edge of the machine. One screw is holding it on. T400 might be different.

Yes it’s the same.
I had to reinstall a few drivers on the XP one, but it ended up fine.
