Known good T500 RAM upgrade list

#1 Post by gvsa123 » Mon Aug 06, 2018 7:04 pm

Hi everyone! I'm having problems upgrading the RAM on my T500 2055 rz1, and after being referred to this thread, I decided to create one specific to my model/series as there might be some tiny difference[?] between the X2-- series notebooks.

I'm running 64bit linux on Samsung 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500S-07-10-F2 (x2) on the T500 and I'm trying to upgrade the system to have 2x4GBs. So far I've tried the following:
DOES NOT WORK:

CORSAIR 4GB DDR3 1066MHz CL7 SODIMM
GSKILL 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SODIMM
The information I'm getting from the 2 days I've spent trying to figure this out is that it is supposed to take up to a maximum of 8GBs, but that it is somewhat inconsistent with the brand of RAM it likes to work with. Please see this thread from Lenovo.

Thanks a lot!

I have had success with Micron, Kingston, Hynix, and Sk Hynix 2rx8 4GB sticks.

The important part is getting 2rx8 4GB sticks. 1rx8 4GB will not work in T500 ever and it is the same for other Montevina and Arrandale, eg. X200, T410.

Many DDR3 1600 / PC3-12800s sticks come in 1rx8. You can still get PC3-12800s but it must be in 2rx8 to work. I have installed 2rx8 PC3-12800s sticks and they work. Very common is PC3L-12800s which is low voltage and the majority if not all of these are 1rx8 so they do not work in T500. People report more success with DDR3 1066 / PC3-8500s and DDR3 1333 / PC3-10600s 4GB sticks because the majority of those 4GB sticks are 2rx8.

as you are using linux, can you post output of dmidecode --type memory with the samsung 2Gb RAM modules installed?

some other questions meanwhile:
- did you memtest these ram modules?
- did you insert the ram modules correctly? sometimes it doesnt go smoothly when the slot wasn't used previously and it's easy to think it was correctly installed
