T420 Query/Question

#1 Post by GrifterGuru » Wed Sep 05, 2018 10:54 pm

Well, this one came about following the removal of the keybaord to "De-crumb" it (shake out, blow out, tap out any and all debris from under the keys) ready to install the memory and new keyboard ( old one is working just fine, but I hate shiny keyboard keys!!)...

Underneath the keyboard, lurking out of sight is a connector that I had no idea existed vand now it is buging me as to the purpose of it. Obviously it is there for a reason, I would just like to know what that reason is.

Here it is as viewed after lfting the keyboard.. The Right hand side of the laptop is to the top right of the image (Spot the LCD hinge?)

Here it is a little closer... See the Grey block standing up above the board? that is the connector I am talking about.l It is obviously intended for something, but what I do not know and it will drive me to distraction until I do know

Thank you in advance for any help, assistance or advise received.

That connector and two screw holes (on the upper left and lower right corners) -- definitely looks like it's for a dial-up modem card. Removed at least 8 of those in the X60/61 units I've opened up.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Thanks for the replies :)

@axur-delmeria that may explain the Sim card slot in the battery bay if that is the case ;)

@BillMorrow Thank-you. Also, I will be sure to check the HMM, I do love a good read ;)

**** EDIT ****

Editied to add thsat having now read the relevant section of the HMM, it appears the connector is for an MDC, Either Modem or blutooth if I read it correctly.

+1 to @BillMorrow for the tipp-off about the HMM. Was not aware of what that stood for and thought the HMM link was "forbidden fruit" as-it-were.
