T420 LCD/Screen Options?

#1 Post by GrifterGuru » Sat Sep 08, 2018 12:19 am

I am, at the moment, looking to replace my T420 screen as it already has 1 pixel that is dead and to be honest, it is annoying the heck out of me. Given the one pixel, I am sure others will follow and I want to head it off before that becomes a problem.

I was wondering /hoping if there are/that there was, any suitable/possible upgrades out there that require only to remove the current screen/LCD and replace it.

Ideally looking for a swap that requires as little work as possible as it is my daily use "go to" system and do not fancy the idea of not being able to use it for an extended period of time. Whilst I do have an i7 M73, and a Ryzen build in progress, I still prefer the T420 over everything else.

I appreciate this may have been asked before and I did do a quick forum search but could not locate a definitive answer on the subject.

Therefore, if this HAS been asked and HAS been answered already, I will apologise now.

With that said, as always, any help, advise or pointing in the right direction will be appreciated.

Thanks ahead folks ;)

You are wrong in the sense that dead pixels usually do not "follow". Most of them are manufacturing faults and do not tend to spread. Your screen is unlikely to develop more dead pixels. However, if even one annoys you, that's another matter.

If your screen is the 1366x768 one, you can replace it with a 1600x900 one. This requires only the screen (and possibly cable? not sure) to be replaced.

You can also upgrade to aftermarket 1920x1080 screen; this also requires an adapter board. Read some here:

Thanks for the heads up on that thread.

I did actually read it top to bottom, but it left me a tad confused afterwards as to whther it would work or not, as well as which option I should go for.

1920x1080 would be nice, if a little excessive perhaps, however, there was no mention of whether the screen was matte or glossy in the ebay listing..

Make sure to order matte or glossy.
Buying the 1920x1080 screen is the most important part.
You'll need a trusted seller who confirms to you that (s)he is selling you EXACTLY what you order.
A screen sold as "for LCD xyz" is usually an unwanted "compatible" replacement.
If you find the above for or compatible in the small print of any seller, AVOID.
Read what others say about what to buy where.

Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

I must admit, that unless someone can point me to a "trusted" ebay seller, I may just seek out a stock replacement. It seems like too much hassle to wade through the fakes/clones/copies/dupes out there.

I was looking at this, but now I am not so sure as, reading the desc, it states 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 but sent randomly so could be any one of the three!

For HD+ (1600x900) you also need another LCD-cable (see HMM manuals link at the top of this page)
For FHD (1920x1080) you also need another LCD-cable plus an adapter board. See viewtopic.php?f=45&t=122224
