X9100 in T500 shuts down

#1 Post by YoniG » Sat Sep 08, 2018 7:34 am

I just installed an X9100 in a T500 and before I closed it up I tried several times to boot it. Each time it shut down after about 7 seconds. Some times the power LED remains on, some times it goes out and I have to remove/reinsert the power cable to get it back on.
If I reinstall the P8400 which I'm trying to upgrade it starts up.
T500 is 2089W8J according to the BIOS, though the label says 20823GU.
TIA...

Did you update your T500's BIOS to the latest available before you installed the X9100? Did you also try to run it without the battery installed? If all of these don't help, try disabling SpeedStep in the BIOS.

The recent amount of CPU upgrade related problems are starting to worry me, I wonder what is actually going on?

I had no problem upgrading my T500 from that P8400 to the T9600, but I've never tried anything faster.

My T500 runs really well on 8GB RAM, SSD, and that T9600. Couldn't ask for a nicer older T series.

The X9100 has a TDP of 44W. T500 are designed for CPUs with a TDP of only 25 and 35W.
Could it be that your X9100 heats up too fast (E. g. dirty heathsink or bad applied thermal paste), and the system turns itself down because it can't handle the CPU's heat dissipation?

I haven't updated the BIOS. It is version 2.16, 2009-04-22. Is that likely to be a problem? I'll update it if yes, or if will bring other real benefits. But not just to have the latest version.

I tried running it only on AC power, no battery.

I didn't see a BIOS setting for SpeedStep in the CPU section. Is it in the Power section? I only have a few seconds each time it boots until it shuts down.

I'll finish attaching the heatsink and see if that helps.

Huh what do you mean "finish attaching the heatsink"? You didn't try to power this thing on with the heatsink fan off did you? For overclocking, trying and out of spec CPU, or a newer CPU it's a good idea to update the BIOS to the latest version as the latest version will most likely have the microcode support for said CPU.

Beyond that there's are various things that could have gone wrong. CPU might also be bad, considering the age and the overclocking ability of a X9100 that would not be surprising. Who knows how and if the previous user abused it. I know just for kicks I would overclock and kill a CPU on occasion just to push and test the system. Afterwards I would never sell said CPU though.

Well, that processor sure heats up fast. About 7 seconds till shut down without thermal paste.
With thermal paste it's idling around 57C! Not much hotter than the P8400.
I didn't update the BIOS, but Performance Monitor is showing processor speeds of 800, 1.6, 2133, and yes 3.06 :)

Yeah most any processor will heat up quick without proper thermal paste applied and HSF installed. I got the same CPU in a T500 and it runs fine. Hot, stable, battery life sucks but it works.

Integrated oder dedicated GPU?

I have a W500 (phisically almost the same machine) with a T9500 in it and the ATI GPU is disabled it idles under 40*C. If you got over 50°C idle with a 25W TDP P8400 with an integrated GPU something is wrong with your cooling system. However, with an ATI GPU the idle temp over 50°C seems a more normal value to me (In W500 you can switch between integrated and dedicated GPU, but I don't know if the standard T500 has this feature too).

...according to your previous posts, you did not install the heatsink, which is what caused the shutdown. I guess you have your problem solved?

The standard T500 has it too, I think it was mentioned in the hardware maintenance manual.

The 2089-W8J T500 has the integrated graphics chip, and he was actually referring to the X9100 idling at 57C. It is not the P8400 as you mistook it for, that wouldn't sound right for sure.

If you want to use a X9100 on a T/W500, it's pretty much necessary to undervolt it. Stock it runs at 1.2375v. You can undervolt it using ThrottleStop at 1.1750v (57-65C) with no problems. You could also bring the processor down to 1.1v @ 2.8GHz (48-55C) for T9600 performance and crank it up when needed. Without adequate cooling/ undervolting, there is no way the processor will stay cool, but the overclock potential is huge. My latest tests got me 3.73GHz @ 1.3375v.

The heat issue is what has kept me from upgrading yet again to the X9100 from the T9600. The T9600 is plenty fast (and cool) for what this T500 is used for. I do like maxing out an old machine, but the X9100 was a little over-kill.

It is not really. X9100 accept severe undervolting; I have found them running in T400 and T500 machines reasonably cool and stable after voltage control.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

I'm currently undervolting to 1.1625V for all but the 11x, which requires 1.2V. How did you get 1.1V as an option? I'm using RMClock. Could it be that Throttlestop offers multiplier options that RMClock doesn't?

It's not the software. Each processor undervolts differently, with some lower than others; that's all it is.

Selecting "Mobile" in the CPU type selection field of the Advanced CPU settings page changed the voltages available, and all steps are now running at 1.05V except for 11x which requires 1.0875. :)

If he had the formerly installed P8400 idling only a bit cooler than 57°C, he has a cooling problem. A well mantained T500 with integrated GPU and stock CPU should never idle at any value close to 57°C.
