T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
Hello,
I have a ThinkPad T410 with Windows 10 Professional installed and many of the function keys, such as toggle wireless on/off, sleep button, lock computer, etc, do nothing
Also, the microphone mute button has no effect, but the speakers mute works OK.
The THinkVantage button does nothing - what is it meant to do ?
On searching the web I have seen suggestions to check that certain services are running, but the ones mentioned are not even listed.
This has led me to conclusion that I need some software from Lenovo to be installed, but if so, what is it and where do I find it ?
The computer was obtained as refurbished and all the original software had been removed. The original OS had been Windows 7 Professional (License Key in battery compartment), but this had been upgraded to Windows 10 Professional.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Nick.

Thinkpad Power Management Driver and Thinkpad Hotkey Features are usually required.
However, some should just work without any drivers. By default, you need to press Fn+function key to activate the special feature, but I think there may be a BIOS settings to reverse this behavior (just function key for special feature, Fn+function for original behavior).

You need a specific version of Hotkey Features Integration from version list at the bottom of this page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-74261
You need version 3.81 aka 8jvu23ww.exe
Nevermind it says up to Windows 8.1, it and many other 7 drivers work with 10.
Direct link: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... vu23ww.exe
No newer version will function correctly on Windows 10 with classic ThinkPads. The oldest ThinkPads with OEM driver support for Windows 10 are the Ivy Bridge **30 generation ThinkPads.

Re: T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
Many thanks to TPFanatic for his excellent advice.
Most of the function keys and the microphone mute button now work OK.
Just 3 function keys that don't work now. F3 Power management, F4 Sleep and F6 Camera and audio settings.
F3 and F4 do nothing at all. i think I need an extra bit of software for these.
F6 brings up a window saying I have to install ThinkVantage Communications Utility version 1.4 or above. I can't find any program that old, only much newer ones which I assume may not work on this older computer with Windows 10 as above.
Any pointers to the downloads to get these 3 buttons working would be appreciated.
Also, is there anything I can install to get the ThinkVantage function working ?
Regards,
Nick.

Re: T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
Fn F3 requires the Lenovo Power Manager software. Getting this to work in Win 10 is a complex issue that I don't have experience in.
I'm surprised Fn F4 does not work. That should do things by default as a Windows function, it is called the Sleep button.
Regarding making them and the ThinkVantage buttons do things,
there is a neat program called ThinkpadHotkey for setting registry commands for the hotkeys.
I don't remember where I got it from, so I have reshared it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10w88Qj ... sp=sharing

Re: T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
Maybe the PC is configured to do nothing when sleep button is pressed?

Re: T410 Function Keys and Microphone Mute Button
OK - it seems I must be a bit dim . dr_st is quite correct - the sleep function was not configured in Windows 10 - my excuse is it must be many years since I used a laptop and set that function up. F4 sleep works OK now.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to install and set up F4 Power Manager on Windows 10 and where to obtain ThinkVantage Communications Utility version 1.4 for button F6 it would be appreciated.
It's been a long time since I used a laptop and I'm quite impressed by this older model - it even seems to run some programs much better than my core i7 desktop.

Nick.
