Seek suggestions for blu-ray replacement drive for T500

#1 Post by James1138 » Tue Nov 13, 2018 11:33 am

In 2019 I am planning to replace the DVD player/burner that came pre-installed on my T500 Thinkpad so I can watch blu-ray movies. For me... it is far cheaper than buying a whole new Thinkpad and far easier than moving all my stuff to the new laptop. I started shopping online and see several possible options such as UJ262 Blu-ray BD-RE Writer Drive for Lenovo Thinkpad T500 T510 .
My question - is there a recommended model/type blu-ray drive for the T500? I already updated my BIOS to the most recent official version on my T500 - but is there anything else I may need to do after the swapout? I am running Devuan (Debian 9 /Linux variant but without systemd) - hardware drivers appear already installed on the T500.

Thanks in advance.

I think there all the same so, you should be fine with whatever bluray drive you buy.

it's not a common option, but bluray was an option on this laptop and I have one, but am not likely to sell it and it's in storage so I cannot provide the partnumber, but shouldn't be hard to find.I think they can also be reflashed with opensource firmware to play any region bld or dvd, most commercial players cannot, but I'm no expert in this field.
