T400 /p8400 64 bit w10 switchable -----

#1 Post by Ignorant » Sat May 25, 2019 10:01 am

I have a w10 64 bit working. The switchable graphics is all crap(vokswagon quality) and generates heat in excess of any usage.!
The chip say ATI Mobility 3400 series but i get only 1152X 864 max. In software only i get 1440 X 900.
Is that correct or i can chnage the ATI/AMD driver? I have a high resolution tube light based lcd.

ATI video driver download page as below, and think your T400 has ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 w/ 256MB (hybrid switching):

www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-615

~Unfortunately it looks like your GPU is not supported undre Win10, as amd.com webpage explained that:

"AMD Radeon™ HD 4000 Series products and older are not certified to support Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.2 or higher and therefore, do not have driver support for Windows® 10.
The following is a list of graphics products that do not support Windows® 10:
...
ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 Series /ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3000 Series Graphics...
...
...
Windows® 10 will install the default Microsoft® Basic Display Driver (MBDD) for these graphics adapters. MBDD provides basic display functionality (low resolutions and color) on a single monitor but DOES NOT support:

Display scaling control
Multiple displays
Display rotation
Video capture
Power settings
VSync control
Brightness control on integrated display panels
AMD Catalyst™ Control Center"
Daily Driver: (X1E3) X1 Extreme 3rd Gen | mobile broadband (WWAN)
Current Thinkpads: X1E3 | X1E1 | X1C10 | X1C9 | X1C4 | X1C3 | X230
Retired Thinkpads: X250 | T410 | T42 | 560 (circa 1996)

I have learnt how to disable discrete graphics via bios setting. But my laptop still sizzles @(mumbai India) with w10 software graphics at 1400x900.How do i get the most appropriate software video driver if the fan is working propeRly?.i do graphics, dont use it to play songs /no videos. If it computes numbers i am happy.
Please ...experiences....

Dump W10 and install Linux, e.g. Mint or Manjaro.

I agree on using a Linux host. If you need anything Windows-specific you can run Windows in a VM or using Wine if the program is compatible.

If the machine is getting hot you may need new thermal paste and dust cleaning.

This is just the well-known issue with 3470.

Dump W10, install Linux / W7, everything will work just fine.

Dusting is always a good thing anyway ;)

I forgot to post then....
The display driver for swtchable graphics can be taken from Lenovos end of life for windows 7 and used in compatibility mode.works fine....
The discrete only choice does generate much more heat...tolerable....There is a also w7 version of AMD 3470 chip.....I never explored if leovos drivers are same as AMD 3470...!
