T500 Win7 32bit to Win8.1 64bit

#1 Post by yeneb » Tue Oct 15, 2019 5:03 am

I want to perform a clean install of Win8.1 64bit on my T500 delivered with Win7 32bit.

I know I need to perform a clean install but I have not done so in several years. I have searched the forum and have not found anything comprehensive. I have a new full version disk purchased retail.

Can any one give me or point me to step by step instructions about how to do it? Thanks in advance.
Tim

Make sure the CD drive is set up as the first boot device in the BIOS, insert the disc and follow the prompts. Nothing to it.

After it loads and is running, visit Lenovo for your drivers. There should be a basic wi-fi driver on the install disc. I usually back-up the wi-fi driver to a stand alone back-up drive just to be certain. Afterwards, if required you can install this driver then visit the Lenovo site for the rest.

Also try Lenovo's System Update to get the latest drivers.

A clean install is quite routine. BUT: if you're not using a wired network connection, make sure you've downloaded the network drivers from Lenovo. I don't recall whether Win8.1 has appropriate native drivers. If they do, you're obviously OK. If not, there's nothing more frustrating than being unable to subsequently connect to your wireless network to use your T500.

Would wired network connections work? Ethernet? USB?

Basic functions requiring native drivers such as USB, video, etc., will run fine.

Drivers for power manager, function keys (fn), installed video cards (if any), Smart card reader, etc., will be found at the Lenovo site.

The automatic download for drivers for the T400/500 series is no longer available so you will have to pick and choose which drivers from the legacy page to download and install.

On the Lenovo EOL page for the T500 there is a drop down menu to select the type of driver to download. It will give an explanation of the driver and usually a read-me page about any updates or bug fixes.
