Memory type on T460: only DDR3 or also DDR4?

#1 Post by pictux » Thu Nov 21, 2019 2:07 pm

Hi guys,
I'd like to understand well the memory types supported by my T460.

The CPU is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6600U; I see in the Intel site: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... 0-ghz.html
that it supports both DDR4-2133 and DDR3L-1600
At the moment there's a Samsung M471B1G73EB0-YK0 that is a DDR3-1600 SODIMM PC3L-12800S Dual Rank x8.

If i search in the Crucial site: https://it.crucial.com/ita/it/aggiornam ... nkpad-t460
i find only DDR3-1600 memory.
The same if I search in the Lenovo site: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/it/en/prod ... y/as-built

Here's the thing.
I've bought few days ago an X260 and it has an i3-6100u that in the Intel site supports the same memory types.
It has at the moment a single module that is a DDR4-2133. And if i search in the Lenovo site I see only DDR4 memory, same if I search in the Crucial site.

Considering that the i7-6600u and the i3-6100u are of the same generation, and that they are both of the same "age", why there is this difference on the Lenovo site?

And more important: will the DDR4 memory work in my T460?
And again: would it possible to mix DDR3 and DDR4 memory modules?

Thanks

Short answer: no, and no.

Long answer: Even if a CPU/chipset support different kinds of DDR RAM, the different types cannot be mixed; only one can work at the same time. On desktop boards you would sometimes see both types of slots, and although you wouldn't be able to mix different RAM, you could choose which one to use. On laptops, because there is far less space on the board, this would be almost inconceivable, and I know of no model that implements dual RAM technologies.

It is strange (and uncommon) that Lenovo would choose different RAM technologies for same-generation machines, but that's what we have.

This also happened with Dell in 2008: Precision M4400 (and equivalent Latitudes) used DDR2 while M6400 used DDR3.
Probably a marketing decision: X260 and M6400 could be considered more 'premium' vs the more mainstream 14"/15" models. Note the T460p, T460s, and P50/P70 also use DDR4 while T560 uses DDR3 (as does P50s for some reason).

P50s is just a T560 with a workstation Quadro series GPU.

Back in the day, the 2008 Montevina chipset lineup also had some RAM tech overlap. The T500, T400, W500, R500, R400, X200, W700, and X301 all used new DDR3 RAM, while the SL500, SL400, and SL300 held out with DDR2.

lenovo T430s i5 3230m 16GB QHD w/ optimus(RIP), lenovo T430 i5 3320m 8GB FHD, lenovo T500 P9700 8GB WUXGA(LED) w/ switchable graphics
