T410 P-key died--Can we fix it?

#1 Post by w0qj » Sat Jan 25, 2020 1:07 am

Hi everyone,

Our T410 keyboard's "P" key died (note: only the "P" key died; everything else is working).
As we wish to keep our T410 (love that 16:10 LCD screen, and love that old style keyboard! Our battery is still doing well):

1) Is there any way to physically take out the "P" key from the keyboard to try to fix it, and to put it back?
<Note: This (1) is our preferred method first>

2) IF above (1) does not work out:
~Where can we buy a new, real, genuine ThinkPad T410 keyboard? (We don't want refurbished)
~We are based in Asia, but can order from any reputable reseller.
~We are aware that T410 keyboard FRU is 45N2240, thanks to RBS:

3) For other T410 owners, the T410 HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) is here:

Check on e.g. eBay for "lenovo t410 key".
Or buy/find any language used NMB keyboard 45N22xx, as listed in the right-most column in the HMM.
If the key itself is still OK and you only need the "scissors" and/or nub, all keys from A-Z and 1-0 use the same mechanism.
Worst case, use another key with a P-sticker.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

Many thanks to RBS yet again!

1. So how do we remove the "P" key to try to fix it?

2. To be quite frank, I'm not sure what is the problem with the non-functional "P" key.
It clicks as usual, and looks quite normal.
Not sure if it's the "P" key mechanical problem, or the sensor broken for the "P" key.

==>Can anyone take a guess at what's the problem with our "P" key? Thanks!

If you haven't already, pop the key cap off by lifting it with a fingernail or small screwdriver at the top corner. https://yourbusiness.azcentral.com/remo ... 20123.html
There may be some crud underneath preventing it from depressing all the way. Mine all have fur coats, courtesy of my dog. :D You can press the actual switch nub underneath with your finger and see if it works then. If so, it either just needs cleaning or there is an issue with the scissor mechanism. If not, its a keyboard issue and I've not dealt with those.

I had an individual key die for no reason on a T400 keyboard. The problem is internal to the keyboard, along with hypersensitive keys. It's easiest to replace the keyboard.

Wow, many thanks for everyone's quick and helpful replies!

Finally got the courage to pry open the "P" key with a screwdriver; turned out it was quite easy!
(And no permanent damage to the key shell cover itself).

Unfortunately there was little/no dust in the "butterfly" scissor mechanism key part.

Pressing the actual switch nub underneath with our finger was unresponsive, despite numerous tries with different force/angles.

Therefore keyboard replacement it is.

Many thanks for everyone's quick and helpful replies!
