New member with T420 questions

#1 Post by Fuzzy » Tue Apr 07, 2020 6:54 am

Hello I joined a few weeks ago and have finally bought a t420 thinkpad which is in real nice condition. I'm just waiting for some ram and a SSD to arrive so I can update that. It does need a new keyboard as the one I have has Arabic lettering on it also. It does have windows 10 downloaded on it and has a decent screen. Really looking forward to using it and hopefully will get around to changing the keyboard. Thought I'd pop in and say hi.

Isn't that Fuzzy user just a bot? There are two posts from him which are basically the same, except for the difference that in one he says that he just bought T420 thinkpad and in other one he bought T430.

No I'm not a bot. I did purchase a t430 on eBay but the buyer never sent it. I then saw a t420 come up for a really good price and purchased this instead. A replacement keyboard has arrived just awaiting the SSD and extra ram and a new sticker for the tracakpad. I have already updated it to windows 10 so far then when all the bits arrive i.,LL upgrade it all. So defo not a bot :)

So new keyboard is here the ram is here just awaiting the SSD but could be a while due to the lockdown which is frustrating. The screen angle isn't the greatest so gonna wait to fit the SSD and if happy may make look into a new type screen to

I have one example of the 420 and I quite like it. As the last of the full size full weight classic series the 420 has that 'Thinkpad widescreen feel" that goes bacl to the T61.

I think mine was a discarded test machine owned by one of this country's biggest airlines. I'm on it now. It's probably close to as maxxed out as you would sensibly do.

std Intel Core i5-2540M
std 2 x 4gb modules 666.7 MHz (DDR3-1333 / PC3-10600)
upg Intel 120gb ssd
std Intel 6300 wireless
std 1,600 x 900 screen

What is problematic is the NVS4200M and Intel HD3000 optimus whatever GFX. I believe Win10 will not co-operate with this. Maybe disable one card in bios?

Also this thing has no USB3.0 but since I onlly use it to get on the net then no large files will be transferred.

The batteries are not easy to get and really, why would you? You only get 3-4hrs at best?

I believe the bios on mine is whitelisted and it has some of the heart bleed etc. fixes.

BIOS Date: 06/04/2018
BIOS Version: 83ET82WW (1.52 )

This Russians love this machine so they hacked out all the bad stuff.

These machines were born about 10 yrs ago? I would be reluctant to spend a lot of money on these, they are curios.

Last time I checked classic kbds arent that cheap, I mean its a given now they arent made for years and years. I got this machine for free and I think I just added the ssd so not really into pumping money into something unless I already own the parts in my parts bins.
