T420 random freeze

I have T420 running Debian stable which randomly freezes.
Years ago I created a dual boot with Debian and Win7. Running Debian I got
random freezes, running Win7 everything was ok. I then just bought another
ThinkPad and used this particular one only with Win7. Yesterday I decided to
give it another try, thinking the problem might be solved by newer software.
Running the current Debian stable I still get the random freezes. If I have
something with sound, e.g. a youtube video running, the last 1 or 2 seconds
will run in a loop after freeze. Connecting via ssh is not possible - it will
timeout.
Since this never happened when using Windows, I assume it is a software
problem. I'm open to use another distro, but wanted to asked if something like
this is known.
Obviously searching the interweb nor the forum didn't help - but maybe I'm just
dumb.
If I need to provide more information, just ask, please.
On a side note, when running, the laptop will also randomly eject the CD tray -
not sure if related.
