good Linux for T510 4GB, SSD

#1 Post by Beldar » Sat Jul 25, 2020 12:27 pm

Right now I'm running PCLinux OS 18.06 Mate and I really like it, except it's a little slow on web browsing compared to my Win7 i5 desktop. In fact even Win10 was snappier on this T510. I've tried some other distros on it, nothing notably faster or slower, some too technical for me, like MX, some too dumbed down, like the 'buntus. I want something in the middle, like PCLinux, but FASTER. And with a good active user forum too, being a n00b.

we have a nice linux section on this forum with great discussion topics which should give you some good advice. as a longtime debian user, i can only advise you debian, but as the french say, des goûts et des couleurs, on ne discute pas  a T510 with SSD should run very smoohtly with a proper installed linux distro with a desktop environment like xfce. one advice, try to upgrade your ram to at least 8GB... it will make your experience more pleasant, cheap upgrade in the end. also quality of the SSD can make a huge difference, always try to go for highend SSD

Thanks. When my tower with Linux gets a new fan setup, I'll return to your kind advice.

Second this. I actually think it may solve all the issues

He he I deem myself reasonably competent being in IT from before I graduated :) ...but I'm totally fine with Ubuntu. I want things to "just work" without tinkering and Ubuntu seems to fit my needs nicely

Sorry people, I reverted to Win7 on this Thinkpad. W7's about as fast as any Linux I've tried on it, but I just couldn't find certain specialized programs on Linux that I've amassed on W7 over many years. Plus, I have 230GB storage on it vs c.2TB on my 8gb RAM tower with its dual-boot W7-Linux. Yes, going to 8gb RAM on it would be good. It has the stock 4GB of DDR3, with I presume an empty slot for another 4GB. Any suggestions on buying?
