T420 Driver for GeForce GT-520m GPU needed (63Y1705 motherboard) needed

#1 Post by wsalomon » Mon Nov 09, 2020 1:10 am

I've replaced the motherboard in my T420. The board that was supplied is a 63Y1705 as a substitute for a 04W2049.

When installing Windows 10 20H2, an error appeared for an Nvidia GeForce GT-520m GPU. This surprised me as the usual Nvidia GPU is the NVS-4200m.

I am unable to find a driver for this. From Device Manager, the PCI ID for this is VEN_10DE & DEV_1050 & SUBSYS_21D017AA.

In the Nvidia drivers I have found, none appear to support the SUBSYS_21D017AA and the install process ends prematurely with a "Hardware not found" error.

I am assuming this "SUBSYS" string refers to this particular motherboard, as the driver for the Intel HD 3000 GPU is VEN_8086 & DEV0126 & SUBSYS_21D017AA (this driver installed correctly, but not the Nvidia).

Any thoughts on where to find this driver would be appreciated.

My thanks in advance.

Was the driver downloaded from NVIDIA's website, or Lenovo's website?

This would be expected if you were using NVIDIA's generic universal driver, which happened to throw the same error on my R61i with a Quadro NVS 140M.

I'm not surprised.

I've seen this happening with other laptops (not ThinkPads but it is related to nvidia lack of support), with newer graphics card such as GT-720M and GT-820M. It turns out nvidia no longer supports those graphic cards so if you download the driver from nvidia page, it will throw an error (hardware not found) and it won't install. The only quick solution was to revert to an older supported driver version (after Windows was installed).

Thanks to the both of you for your thoughts. I summarized what I have learned under the topic "ThinkPad T-420, T-520, and W-520 Nvidia Driver Installation"
