T520 HSF upgrade.

#1 Post by DiagonalArg » Wed Apr 21, 2021 6:28 pm

I found only a single thread mentioning this part number: 75Y5782. I can't find that in the HMM, though I've seen some on ebay and they appear to be AVC. Does anyone know where this might be documented?

I'm trying to upgrade to Ivy Bridge. I'll need a 45W HSF, and while 04W1578, which I have, is listed that way in the HMM, I gather there can be overheating problems. The HMM listed alternatives, 04W1579 and 04W0439 are nowhere to be found. I'm wondering if this might be an option.

That 75Y5782 is an ASM part number.
Lenovo wrote:ASM P/N: ASM is the Assembly (ASM) manufacturing part number. ASM part numbers cannot be purchased from Lenovo or from authorized Lenovo Business Partners.
Such numbers are only meant for (Lenovo) internal use, but many parts also have them printed on the label.
You should basically ignore them and only go for FRU numbers.

You should probably look for the 55W W520 fan with FRU 04W0437/04W1574/04W1575

That's real helpful @RBS, thank you. Unfortunately, I'm seeing some parts on ebay with good pictures but which don't have FRU's. Only ASM's. If you know of any tables of equivalents, that could be useful. For others who may come this way, I did find a part listing resource.

So on your further point, are you saying the W520 HSF's will fit the T520? Somehow I'm doubting that. I have a picture of a 04W1574 (W520, 55W) and a 04W1578 (T520, 45W). The CPU heatsinks look like they bolt on differently - one's a square and one a rectangle. (Images uploaded without ads here, but that's limited to 3 months. Sorry about the ads in the pastebin. If you know of another, please let me know!)

On the W/T530's, swapping between the 04W3627 (AVC) and 04W3622 (Furukawa) seems closer, but still off. (The triangular GPU heatsinks have different geometry.)

On the other hand, those W520/W530 HSF's do look very similar - like maybe they could be exchanged? - even if the T520/T530 are quite different.

I've got one of each of these thinkpads, all with discreet graphics. Can you confirm any of this?

Edit: This guy is asking the same question, but hasn't yet received a response.

Good collection of pictures. So we have 4 groups

1) W520, W530 - interchangeable?
2) T520 nVidia
3) T530 nVidia
4) T520 integrated, T530 integrated - interchangeable ?

I will be trying to fit T520 nVidia HSF (group 2) onto a T530 integrated (group 4) soon.. So I will find it out the hard way if it fits :)
...and I should also be able to verify if group (4) HSF-s are indeed interchangeable too, given the direction of modding I have planned

I have a picture of ... a 04W1578 (T520, 45W)
Purchased. No FRU number, only FOXCONN numbers.
Big heatpipe bent a bit too sharply to my taste but should work.

DiagonalArg says it's
04W1578 for T520, 45W
AliExpress says it's
LSC Original For Lenovo Thinkpad T520 T520i Cooler Cooling Heatsink Fan FRU 04W1578 75Y5782 04W1579 04W0439 75Y5790
I say: it's a perfect fit for a T530 motherboard with integrated graphics + T530 structure frame.

Will compare against T520 integrated graphics motherboard soon. I have a suspicion it would fit too.
Interesting if it's really more powerful than the stock fan which my T520 with integrated graphics already has :)
If not maybe I didn't need this "upgrade".

Until today I had only checked the HMM 'Parts list', not their 'Removing instructions'.
Hence I wasn't aware of the difference in construction betweenW520/T520 since I never had either one.
Apologies if I caused any confusion.

@atagunov - How'd your upgrade go? Any update on this?
