T420 turns off after installing 8g sodim

#1 Post by deickos » Tue Apr 23, 2024 2:45 am

i got 2x4g in my T420 so far and decided to swap one of them for a 8g module. After one or two seconds laptop powers off. The same happens when i put the 8g sodim in a W520. Is it bad?

Quite possible. Or just incompatible. These machines like DDR3, not DDR3L modules.

It's probably bad. :(

I recommend not using it anymore.

Probably bad enough that it's shorted. It is not impossible, I had a 1GB stick fried short by a motherboard with faulty 1.8V DDR2 Vcc power rail with a failed high side mosfet that blasted 19V straight onto the RAM. If I then insert that stick anywhere else the machine will shut down. Same goes for the CPU that has its memory controller fried.
If you're lucky, it could just be one shorted capacitor that you can remove. If you have a bench power supply, blast 1.5V onto those capacitors with the RAM stick not plugged into anything and see which one gets hot (or unfortunate if a ram chip gets hot)

you refer to those tiny caps on the side of the module - i will try but they are so tiny and i don't have the equipment - maybe a photo would help because i cannot see anything

Yes those. Locating whether any one of them is faulty is the harder part where you'd need to inject voltage against the Vcc and ground pins, but once you located one, you can simply pry it out with a screwdriver - there are plenty of redundancy with them
