Question / Problem
I was able to recently revive my T400 with Linux and it's just reminded just how much I loved the laptop back when I was using it in school. The entire laptop is still in really good condition and the hinge, keyboard and all is flawless.
But since it's like a 16 year old laptop, the hardware is very dated. Do you guys think it would be possible to retrofit later generation hardware, with faster CPU, motherboard, and maybe even monitor to give it a new life? I noticed a lot of thinkpads mostly have the same mechanical look so that's what got me curious.
Take a look at our

T400 Upgrade?
Re: T400 Upgrade?
Welcome to the forum.
While there exist enthusiast/hobbyist projects where a modern motherboard was specifically designed to fit inside a classic Thinkpad shell, I do not know of such a project targeting the T400.
And since the T400 was the last of its line to carry this particular design, you cannot fit any original Lenovo motherboard either.
What you possibly could do, is max out the specs of your T400 (even the CPU is upgradeable on that model), and maybe get a newer/better/brighter screen.

Re: T400 Upgrade?
Theoretically, it's possible, since the guys at 51nb managed to design and manufacture upgrade system boards for the Thinkpad T40, T60, X60, and X201 series. In practice, it takes a lot of time, money, and skills to make one.
A different approach is to install a single-board computer inside the chassis and replace the internals to match. There's one guy who replaced the system board of his W701DS with a Lattepanda Alpha: https://www.instructables.com/Thinkpad- ... onversion/
IMO a Lattepanda Iota is a good candidate board, with an Intel N150 processor that runs faster and cooler than the Core 2 Duo in the T400. You can convert the keyboard and trackpoint to USB with this controller board. You'll have to replace the screen, and figure out the power circuitry on your own.
